Design Principles Proximity Font Proximity means where things are placed. Items that are similar should be grouped together: Keep titles grouped to stories by not using a space after the title. White space placed carefully can create groupings Keep photos close to text to group them together There are two main styles of font serif and sans serif. Serif has footers Sans serif – means no serif One last type of font is script and it should be used sparingly for contrast because it can be hard to read. Contrast Repetition Alignment Contrast brings attention to print and can be done using : Color: Size: Keep small stuff small &big stuff big Font: Decorative font can used to add detail and emphasis The publication should carry a similar look throughout Repetition can be done by: Repeating font styles and size Repeating sizing of titles and stories Repeating similar graphics Repeating color schemes throughout Repeating alignment throughout Using alignment can create visual continuity Use similar alignment throughout There are four main types of alignment Left- This is the typical alignment for easy read print Right – This can be used for modern emphasis Center- Partnered with another design style this can be used for added emphasis but should be used sparingly Block- Often uses in newsprint, this can add tight edges, but watch spacing Dark backgrounds and light type also create a decorative contrast
