16. Engineer-in-Residence Program - Introduction to Engineering Russell Middle School Winter 2004 Harry Baker, P.Eng.

Engineering The application of science, mathematics and good judgment to create new products, processes, procedures or systems. Application of scientific theory to practice, Solution of practical problems to benefit people, without harming the environment.

Types of Engineers Aerospace Industrial Agricultural Manufacturing Automotive Mechanical Biomedical Metallurgical Chemical Mining Civil Naval Computer Nuclear Electrical Petroleum Geological Transportation

Becoming an Engineer (1) Sign up for science and math courses in high school (and get good marks), Attend a university engineering program, (35 Canadian universities offer engineering programs) Graduates receive a degree and an “iron ring”. . Become an Engineer-in-Training with a provincial association

Becoming an Engineer (2) 5. Gain 2-4 years of experience under the supervision of a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) 6. Take an exam on ethics and law (and pass) 7. Provincial Association gives the P.Eng. designation, a stamp and a license to practice engineering.

Problem Solving Problem solving is a complex process requiring engineers to interpret data (measurements), control variables (minimize things that affect the problem) and formulate hypotheses (possible solutions). The engineering approach to solving problems uses the inquiry and design processes.

The Engineering Approach (1) The inquiry process: (at the first stage of problem-solving) Explore the challenges associated with the problem, Develop questions from the problems and predict possibilities, Plan and carry out activities to gather data, Interpret their results and come to conclusions based on evidence, Evaluate and communicate their conclusions, Apply their new knowledge to other problems (experience)

The Engineering Approach (2) The design process: Recognize and define the problem, Investigate the problem and generate many ideas and possible solutions, Develop the best solutions, Create working diagrams and models, Make a prototype and test the solution, Modify the solution if not successful
