The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) defines engineering: “the profession in which a knowledge of the mathematical and natural sciences gained by study, experience, and practice is applied with judgment to develop ways to utilize, economically, the materials and forces of nature for the benefit of mankind.”

Engineering Technology programs prepare students for practical design and production work. Graduates of Engineering Technology programs may get jobs similar to those obtained by Engineers. Technicians install and maintain products, providing a wide range of services: implementation of the design, testing, calibration and supervision of its operation.

Be always motivated and confident Be honest, serious, and goal oriented Be inquisitive and proactive Don’t waste your time with nonsense Rely on text books not on class notes Keep improving your English language Be a Leader: decide what you want to be, not let someone else decide for you. Look for future market: foresee demand for different engineers at the time when you graduate (three or five years from now)

How to design something from scratch, and how take an idea from paper to reality build something Some of you may be in the first year. Transition from high school to college may be a big step. Keep in mind what you do for next five years will effect you for the rest of your life.

You start studying and preparing from the very first day of class. Attend your classes regularly. Get help right away. Take good notes. Select a good study place. Form study groups. Prepare for examination.

Many reasons to join an engineering organization: - Networking and participation in tours. - Listening to technical guest speaker. - Participate in design competitions - Learning opportunities through short courses. Web sites of various engineering organizations: The primary purpose of these professional engineering organization is to offer: - Conduct conferences and meetings. - Publish technical journals, books, report, etc. - Offer short training courses. - Provide a networking mechanism.

22 Your Graduation Plan Meet with your advisor to understand what the requirements are for admission to the college and the specific programs. Sit down with advisor and plan your graduation. Make sure you understand the prerequisites for each course and in which semester is offered; a program flowchart will be quite useful. For the student studying diploma and planning to transfer to Bachelor later, they should learn about the transfer policies and requirements.

Doing Volunteer work: volunteer for a few hours a week to help those in need in your community Vote in local and national elections: Exercise your right to vote, be active in your local state Get to know your classmates: to have someone to contact to find out what you missed Get to know an upper-division engineering student: Can provide you with valuable information about their engineering education experience and campus social issues.
