Presentation transcript:

Plants and animals have structures for respiration, digestion, waste disposal, and transport of materials. 5th grade Life Sciences

Plant and Animal Cells Many multicellular organisms have specialized structures to support the transport of materials.

The basic unit of structure and function of all living things. cell The basic unit of structure and function of all living things. 5th Life Sciences Lesson 1

organelle A structure in cells that has a specific function to help keep the cell alive. 5th Life Sciences Lesson 1

structure In an organism, a part that can be recognized by its shape and other properties. 5th Life Sciences Lesson 1

The job of each structure. function The job of each structure. 5th Life Sciences Lesson 1

A living thing made up of many cells. multicellular A living thing made up of many cells. 5th Life Sciences Lesson 1

organisms Any living thing. 5th Life Sciences Lesson 1

Circulatory and Transport Systems Blood circulates through the heart chambers, lungs, and body and how carbon dioxide and oxygen are exchanged in the lungs and tissues.

To move from one place to another. transport To move from one place to another. 5th Life Sciences Lesson 2

circulatory system Organs that “move” or transports blood, nutrients, and other materials throughout the body. 5th Life Sciences Lesson 2

Small blood vessels that carry oxygen rich blood throughout the body. capillary Small blood vessels that carry oxygen rich blood throughout the body. 5th Life Sciences Lesson 2

veins Medium blood vessels that carry blood low in oxygen from the body back to the heart. 5th Life Sciences Lesson 2

Large blood vessels that carry blood from the heart to the body artery Large blood vessels that carry blood from the heart to the body 5th Life Sciences Lesson 1

Transports water and nutrients through the plant vascular tissue Transports water and nutrients through the plant 5th Life Sciences Lesson 2

Transports food throughout the plant. phloem Transports food throughout the plant. 5th Life Sciences Lesson 2

Moves water and nutrients from the roots up to the leaves. xylem Moves water and nutrients from the roots up to the leaves. 5th Life Sciences Lesson 2

phloem and xylem 5th Life Sciences Lesson 2

Respiratory and Circulatory Blood circulates through the heart chambers, lungs, and body and carbon dioxide and oxygen are exchanged in the lungs and tissues. Plants use carbon dioxide and energy from sunlight to build molecules of sugar and release oxygen. Plant and animal cells break down sugar to obtain energy, a process resulting in carbon dioxide and water.

Process by which plants make food. photosynthesis Process by which plants make food. 5th Life Sciences Lesson 3

energy needs 5th Life Sciences Lesson 3

The inhaling of oxygen and exhaling of carbon dioxide. respiration carbon dioxide oxygen The inhaling of oxygen and exhaling of carbon dioxide. 5th Life Sciences Lesson 3

An organ that pumps blood throughout your body. heart An organ that pumps blood throughout your body. 5th Life Sciences Lesson 3

chambers needs. 5th Life Sciences Lesson 3

Gas that is exhaled as waste. carbon dioxide Gas that is exhaled as waste. 5th Life Sciences Lesson 3

oxygen Gas that we inhale. 5th Life Sciences Lesson 3

The heart and the circulatory system. cardiovascular The heart and the circulatory system. 5th Life Sciences Lesson 3

The Digestive System The sequential steps of digestion and the roles of teeth and the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and colon in the function of the digestive system.

digestion Breaking food down into nutrients the cells need for energy, growth, and repair. 5th Life Sciences Lesson 4

The opening which takes in food. mouth The opening which takes in food. 5th Life Sciences Lesson 4

A long tube that leads from the mouth to the stomach. esophogus A long tube that leads from the mouth to the stomach. 5th Life Sciences Lesson 4

stomach The organ of the digestive system that mixes food with digestive juices 5th Life Sciences Lesson 4

The organ that connects the stomach to the large intestine. small intestine The organ that connects the stomach to the large intestine. 5th Life Sciences Lesson 4

The organ after the small intestine where water is absorbed. large intestine The organ after the small intestine where water is absorbed. 5th Life Sciences Lesson 4

Organ that removes cellular waste from the blood. kidney Organ that removes cellular waste from the blood. 5th Life Sciences Lesson 4
