What You Need to Know For Now MLA Citations— What You Need to Know For Now

What you need to cite: any information not considered common knowledge According to Harvard sleep scientist Josna Adusimilli, “[T]he performance of someone who has been awake for twenty-four hours straight is similar to that of someone with a blood alcohol level of 0.1 per cent” (Konnikova). What you need to cite: any information not considered common knowledge statistics material you paraphrase from a source direct quotes from a source

MLA In-text Citations Put the author’s last name and the page number you’re citing in parentheses at the end of the quote or reference—but inside the period. If there’s no author, use a short form of the title—but make sure that your title matches the beginning of the citation in your Works Cited (or in this case, Working Bibliography). One study found that only 11% of college students have “good sleep quality” (“Sleep”).

Working Bibliography Basics Use the term “Working Bibliography” as a header. Your list should be in alphabetical order. Include any sources you cited in your paper (this is essential!)—and make sure that your parenthetical citation matches the beginning of the final citation, author, title, etc. Because this is a working bibliography, you should also include any sources you consulted or intend to use for your project. For an A paper, you need at least 5 different sources (see rubric). For people you might talk to or organization you intend to contact, just list names at this point—since you haven’t actually interviewed them yet.

Citation Formats—the Down & Dirty Articles from a website or websites (see entry 13b, p. 142 in Pocket Handbook)— Author last name, author first name. “Article title.” Website Title. Website sponsor. Date or date updated. Web. Date of access. Konnikova, Maria. “The Walking Dead.” The New Yorker. The New Yorker. 9 Jul. 2015. Web. 2 Feb. 2016. “Sleep.” Bwell Health Promotion.
