Why Europeans Continued to Migrate to Upper and Lower Canada Immigration Why Europeans Continued to Migrate to Upper and Lower Canada

Getting Started What causes people to move from their homes, communities, countries? Why did you think so many people immigrated to the British colonies (which became Canada) in the early 1800s? Think back to some of the major events covered in Social Studies 9 if you can

Origins, Means of Transport, Motivations Complete the worksheet to summarize the different reasons why people continued to immigrate to Upper and Lower Canada despite the challenges they faced once they arrived… Create a T-Chart What are the pros and cons of immigrating to Canada? Be sure to take into account the social, economic, geographic and political impact

Patterns of Migration Examine the table on page 24 What patterns do you notice? What year is the immigration rate at its: Highest? Lowest? Why do you think this is?

Problems once in Upper Canada Was it real gamble coming to Canada Unemployment was high and work usually consisted of being a labourer Tough winters, much colder than in England Diseases spread much easier during these times  No medicine and knowledge that we have today Women had an easier time because they could marry men who had already settled in Upper Canada

Immigrant Activity Somewhat similar to last class: You will pick a name from the basket You are an immigrant from Great Britain Some of you will survive and some will not, some will have to return home

You are a newly settled immigrant that has just settled in Canada Immigration Letter You are a newly settled immigrant that has just settled in Canada Write home to Europe explaining your everyday life in Canada, the living conditions, the people around you, the weather, employment opportunities Can use the handout provided: Around 250 words. http://jubilation.uwaterloo.ca/~marj/genealogy/letters/adsett.html
