1 John Cabot (Giovanni Caboto) 1450-1499

2 Personal Information John Cabot was born in Genoa, Italy somewhere around 1450. He was a very good navigator. Giovanni Cabato was his original name. Cabot decided to move to England in 1495. John Cabot was a very good navigator because before he was a navigator he was a mapmaker. He was once a merchant or a shopkeeper.

3 Purpose of Expedition John Cabot went on the trip to the New World because he wanted to find wealth for England. Cabot also wanted to claim new land for England.

4 Travel Route John Cabot traveled from England to Canada.
He traveled the coast of Ireland, across the Atlantic Ocean, and then north of the route Christopher Columbus took.

5 Results of Expedition Cabot went on his expedition with 18 men.
John Cabot discovered the land that is now Canada. Cabot claimed the land for England. John Cabot got wealth for his country (England). England became more powerful.

6 Importance of this Expedition
Cabot thought it was important to go to find new land because that would claim new land for England. He also thought it was important because it would bring lots of wealth to England. It was important to find to land so England would become more powerful, in that time, claiming land gave your country lots of power.

John Cabot found a part of Canada. Cabot claimed Canada for England. England became very powerful.

The Beothuk’s lived in Canada and decided to move to inland Canada. When Cabot reached Canada, the Beothuk’s had already moved inland. So John Cabot never met or knew about the Beothuk’s.

10 Fun Facts John last name (Caboto) means coasting vessel.
On the boat, they collected rain water to drink. The ship John Cabot explored on when he found Canada was called the Matthew. In the 1400’s spices were very valuable. Cabot sailed an ocean that people called The Sea of Darkness.

11 Timeline John Cabot was born in Italy 1450.
In 1461, John Cabot moved to Venice. John got married in 1474. Cabot moved to England in the 1490’s. King Henry VII gave Cabot the right to seek new land and claim it for England in On May 2nd 1497, Cabot boarded his ship Matthew and started his journey. June 9th 1497, John found the New World. On June 26th, he began to return to England. John goes on another journey in 1498. On June 11th, 1498 the journey became very difficult because there were icebergs and extremely cold weather. Because of the icebergs, Cabot decided to go back home to England. In 1499 John Cabot died in a shipwreck.
