Introduction to New Product Development (Documentation) Tech 190A Week 13 Lecture Introduction to New Product Development (Documentation)

Design Documentation: Design documentation can be defined as all documented information that are created for a product beginning from its planning stages to even while it has been completed and it is now being used by the customer. Its intended users are many and include the company, engineers, employees, customers, contractors, suppliers, governments, and all the other stakeholders associated with the company.

Design Documentation Includes: All necessary product and part views in the form of working drawings, detailed and assembly drawings. Dimensions, tolerances, special manufacturing notes, and standard components. Part numbers, bill of materials, and detailed part specifications. Product electronic data files used by manufacturing planning and control, production engineering, marketing and quality control. Process plans of how the product will be manufactured. History of the product. Others.

Product and Part Views

Dimensions, Tolerances, & Manufacturing Notes

Part Numbers and Bill of Materials

Product Electronic Data Files All key product-related electronic information for businesses communication electronically. May include electronic information of: Part numbers Part dimensions Part prices Quantities Part history Material library Part views Process plans Suppliers Others

Process Plans of How Product will be Manufactured The flow process chart is for planning processes for each part Each part in the product has its own chart The operation process (assembly) chart is for assembly processes The whole product is done with one chart

The Flow Process Chart  TRANSPORTATION _____  STORAGE(S) _____ PRODUCT NAME:   FLOW BEGIN FLOW END DATE PREPARED BY: APPROBED BY: PROCESS SYMBOL AND NO. USED  OPERATION_____  INSPECTIONS _____  DELAYS _____  TRANSPORTATION _____  STORAGE(S) _____ TASK NO. PROCESS SYMBOLS DESCRIPTIO OF TASK TIME INVOLVED MACHINE REQUIRED TOOLING REQUIRED     

The Assembly Chart

History of the Product Should include information like: When the product was initiated How the product was initiated Why the product was initiated Who the target population was Market study information about the product Market expectations of the product Problems encountered during its development Success stories about the product Why certain decisions were made about the product Others
