1 Manufacturing Process
Introduction to Engineering Design © 2016 Project Lead The Way, Inc.

2 What is an assembly line?
A line of workers (or robots) and machines in a production setting. Each worker has a task. The process moves from worker to worker until the product is completed. Henry Ford is credited with introducing new mass- production methods, including large production plants, the use of standardized parts and, in 1913, the world’s first moving assembly line for cars. 3 Planning an assembly line
Product design What product is being manufactured? Manufacturing process design How is the product being produced? Schedule design What quantity is required to be produced?

4 Manufacturing Process Design
Process flow diagram – used to plan out and document the steps in a manufacturing assembly line. Define the process to be developed Determine constraints (time, equipment, cost) Brainstorm the steps that need to occur to construct the product Organize the steps in sequence Draw arrows to show the final process flow
