Peace, Love, and the Sixties

Martin Luther King, Jr. was one of the greatest American voices for peace. He led the African-American Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, with the message of non-violent protest. “I Have a Dream”

One example of non-violent protests were sit-ins One example of non-violent protests were sit-ins. Here you can see the Woolworth Diner sit-in. The protesters stayed sitting at the counter even when people poured food and drinks on them.

At this time America had also entered a war in Vietnam At this time America had also entered a war in Vietnam. Many people did not support this war. They used messages like these in their protests.

The problems of the 60s led to the Hippie movement The problems of the 60s led to the Hippie movement. Hippies supported peace and love, and used symbols like the peace sign, flowers, and tie dye to express themselves.

The message for peace was also expressed through music The message for peace was also expressed through music. Artists like Bob Dylan and John Lennon sang about ending war and supporting peace in “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “Imagine.”

As the world was struggling with wars and social problems, people wanted, and protested for, peace and equality. In all, the 60s was a time of great change. From music to fashion to politics, everything had a new look after the 1960s.
