2 The « Youthquake » A term that refers to young adults wearing long hair, peace symbols and colourful clothing, sometimes engaging in sexual promiscuity and experiments with drugs (the hippie phenomenon) Such behaviour reflected a strong focus on personal freedom

3 This phenomenon is known as counterculture The youth wanted to question and challenge everything older generations believed In music this included artists like The Beatles, Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, and The Who Many of these artists used music to address social concerns of the era

5 Social Activism Other youth used more productive ways to change the world. Several important movements appeared: 1. Environmental Movement: led by groups such as “Greenpeace” 2. Women’s Movement: the United Nations declared 1975 as international women’s year, and many young women fought for equality

6 3. Aboriginal Movement: Canadian youth joined natives to support their treaty rights and heritage 4. Student Movement: demonstrated with marches and protests against the Vietnam War and in support of greater student participation in university affairs (Song study: Buffy St. Marie The Universal Soldier)
