1 The Civil Rights Movement Leaders And Strategies
In the 1950’s and 1960’s no single group ran the Civil Rights Movement. Many Groups worked together for a common goal.

2 National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)
Organization started in 1909 that worked to gain legal equality for African Americans. They used lawyers and the court system to fight for equality.

3 Congress of Racial Equality (CORE)
Organization started in 1942 and dedicated to ending racial segregation through peaceful actions. They were the first to use a type of protest called the “sit-in”

4 Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC)
Organization headed by Martin Luther King Jr. that initiated the idea of the “non-violent direct action protest”, a peaceful way of protesting against racist policies.

5 Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC-called Snick)
The student wing of the SCLC, which later broke away on its own. They were for immediate change, not gradual change.
