Aims of the day To support teachers, lecturers and assessors in their understanding of the requirements of the revised course assessment for National 5 Fashion & Textile Technology To provide opportunities for delegates to: ask questions and seek clarification discuss the revised requirements with colleagues

Programme for the day To provide: an overview of the revised course assessment for National 5 detailed information on the question paper and coursework components an opportunity to ask questions and clarify an opportunity to share good practice

Structure of the course assessment Component 1: Question Paper 30 marks, 30% of the course assessment Set and marked by SQA Component 2: Assignment 50 marks, 35% of the course assessment Submitted to SQA for marking Component 3: Practical Activity Marked by centre staff, subject to verification by SQA

Skills, Knowledge and Understanding Skills, knowledge and understanding for the course assessment The following provides details of skills, knowledge and understanding sampled in the course assessment:   choose textiles based on their characteristics and properties, and evaluate their suitability for different purposes: fibres: natural fibres, regenerated fibres, synthetic fibres types of fabric construction: woven, knitted, felted, bonded explain fashion/textile trends

Skills, Knowledge and Understanding explain the fashion/textile choices of consumers: peer pressure, celebrity/role models, online shopping, environmental issues use investigative techniques to carry out detailed investigations into given briefs interpret and develop solutions for detailed fashion/textile items to meet given briefs

Presentation 1 Question Paper

Question Paper The question paper will be worth 30 marks There will be 3 x 10 mark questions Each question will be themed All questions will be drawn from the skills, knowledge and understanding listed in the National 5 Fashion and Textile Technology: Course Specification All questions will use command words from SQA’s defined list

Command words Name/state/identify/give What the candidate has to do: Provide a number of items or facts that are relevant to the question. Example: Name two types of seam that would be suitable for a denim skirt.

Command words Describe What the candidate has to do: Define or give an account of a number of points that relate to the question. Example: Describe four design features that would be important for a baby’s soft toy.

Command words Explain What the candidate has to do: Make the relationship between things clear by showing the connection Example: Explain two factors that should be considered when choosing a fabric for baby’s clothing.

The difference between ‘describe’ and ‘explain’ Command words The difference between ‘describe’ and ‘explain’ Describe four design features that would be important for a baby’s soft toy. All features should be attached securely. Explain the importance of four design features for a baby’s soft toy. The eyes should be secure so that the baby cannot get them off and swallow them.

Describe two seams that could be used Or Explain two ways of embellishing the dress

Describe two hem finishes that could be used Or Explain two ways to adapt the style of the dress

Command words Evaluate What the candidate has to do: Make a judgement based on the information provided and related to the context of the question Example: Evaluate the suitability of four key aspects of using a nylon fabric to make nightwear.

Marking the Question Paper Workshop 1 Activity Marking the Question Paper

Workshop 1 Activity Task 1 On the candidate evidence provided: Mark Question 1 in accordance with the marking instructions Calculate the total marks awarded for the question Remember: You must make a decision whether or not to award each mark.

Structure of the Coursework Component 2: Assignment 50 marks, 35% of the course assessment Submitted to SQA for marking Component 3: Practical Activity Marked by centre staff, subject to verification by SQA

Assignment and Practical Activity Stage 1: Design and Plan 1a Identify two themes to investigate from the chosen brief. No change 2 marks

Assignment and Practical Activity 1b Produce evidence of carrying out three investigations into the themes each with a specific focus, using at least two different investigative techniques. Change: An additional investigation is required 5 marks x 3 investigations = 15 marks

Assignment and Practical Activity 1c Present an appropriate solution for the detailed fashion/textile item, identifying and explaining seven features which relate to findings from each of the investigations. Presentation of solution 2 marks No change Explanation of features 14 marks Change: Increase in mark allocation from 8 to 14

1c: The solution - explanation Based on evidence from the investigations, marks may be awarded for explanation of: A minimum of two design features A minimum of two properties and/or characteristics of textiles to be used A minimum of two construction/finishing techniques to be used Up to a total of 14 marks Change: Increase in the number of explanations from 4 to 7

National 5 Assignment and Practical Activity 1d Produce a detailed plan for the making of the detailed fashion/textile item. Change: Increase in mark allocation from 3 to 4 1e Prepare a requisition for the required textiles, components, tools and equipment Change: New section 3 marks

Stage 2: Making the item 2a Set up, adjust and use appropriate tools and equipment correctly and according to safety guidelines 6 marks No change 2b Identify and use an appropriate paper pattern for the detailed fashion/textile item Change: New section 3 marks

2c: Making the detailed fashion/textile item 2c Make and finish a detailed fashion/textile item using at least eight appropriate textile construction techniques. Quality of construction techniques demonstrated 28 marks Overall standard of the finished fashion/textile item 8 marks No change
