Qualifications Update: National 5 Art and Design Qualifications Update: National 5 Art and Design

Developing qualifications - drivers Progression – provide progression from Es & Os and maximise continuity between levels More open and flexible requirements – fewer, broader outcomes, more focus on skills Assessment which supports learning - open evidence requirements – choice of assessment approaches – opportunities for combined assessment Refreshed and relevant contexts for learning, providing challenge and enjoyment Personalisation and Choice – in content/contexts for Units - Added Value Unit at National 4 – coursework assessment at National 5 Robust and credible – current high standards in qualifications will be maintained

CfE Levels early years 1 2 3 4 SCQF Levels 1 2 3 4 Continues to 12 ≈ Relationship between CfE and SCQF Levels

provides a broad practical experience of art and design and related critical activities provides opportunities for learners to be inspired and creatively challenged as they explore how to visually represent and communicate their personal thoughts, ideas and feelings through their work provides opportunities to consider the factors influencing artists’ and designers’ work and practice provides opportunities for learners to develop and produce expressive art and design work Key points

provides opportunities to build challenging, coherent and enjoyable progression through all levels has a hierarchical Unit structure that provides progression from National 3 to Higher has added value assessments that provide personalisation and choice in the practical activity at National 4, and portfolios at National 5 and Higher. Question papers also provide added value at National 5 and Higher

New Quality Assurance arrangements Will cover new National 1 to National 5 from 2013/14 New arrangements will promote shared understanding of national standards through a collaborative and partnership approach New ‘Nominee’ role - provides a pool of nationally trained experts Intense verification in the first 3 years, then an intelligence led approach will be adopted Verification in Nov/Dec, Feb and Apr/May - allows for early identification of issues and support/guidance to be given

Art and Design Unit Assessment National 3 to National 5

Unit assessment Flexible and open Assessment Standards and Evidence Requirements in Units Greater range of techniques and methodologies for assessment – encouraged through Unit assessment support packages Assessments can be designed to provide evidence across more than one outcome or Unit – combined assessments More opportunities to gather naturally occurring evidence – assessment as part of learning and teaching

Unit Assessment Support packages – purpose Assessment support packages will be provided which you can use to: Assess your candidates Adapt for your own assessment programmes Help you develop your own assessments

Unit Assessment Support packages – key features Valid from August 2013 Designed to encourage professional judgement Provide broad-based tasks – allow assessors to choose appropriate context and forms of evidence Show range of approaches to generating assessment evidence Give information on the type of evidence which could be gathered and how this is to be judged against Assessment Standards

Unit assessment support packages - approaches Package 1 (Oct 2012) Unit by Unit approach – discrete exemplar assessment tasks for each Unit Package 2 (Feb 2013) Unit by Unit approach – discrete assessment tasks for each Unit Package 3 (Apr 2013) Portfolio approach – naturally occurring evidence Combined thematic approach to gathering evidence for Outcomes and Assessment Standards from both Expressive and Design Units

Assessment Package 1 Art and Design: Expressive Activity/Design Activity Unit by Unit approach 2D/3D exemplar contexts independent work, with support appropriate to the SQCF level describes appropriate evidence and success criteria for each Outcome/assessment standard re-assessment by assessment standard is possible exemplar tasks/contexts for learning and recording documentation

Assessment Package 1 Key issues for the subject -integration of art and design knowledge and practical art and design skills -creative experimentation and development of ideas -explicit focus on reflection (creative process) -making assessment judgements - standards are comparable to existing qualifications -reasonable assistance/support – given stimuli (N3/N4)/supported reflection

Art and Design Added Value Assessments: - National 5 Course Assessment - National 4 Added Value Unit

Adding Value – National 4, National 5 Each Course at National 4 and National 5 includes assessment of Added Value For National 4, the added value is in an Added Value Unit - not graded For National 5, the added value is in the Course Assessment - graded A - D (as at present)

Added Value Makes the Course more than the sum of its parts Builds on current Course assessment and Group Award approaches Defined as breadth, challenge and/or application as outlined in Building the Curriculum 5 May involve accumulation, assimilation, integration and/or application of skills, knowledge and understanding Uses 7 defined assessment methods (there usually two of these)

Controlled Assessment Where the assessment method is not a question paper, SQA has introduced the concept of controlled assessment to ensure fairness and reliability 3 stages of assessment: Setting, Conducting, Marking the assessment Each will have a defined level of control: SQA-led activity, Shared responsibility between SQA and centres, Centre-led Subject-specific decisions, but mostly SQA-led activity in initial years

Art and Design National 5 Portfolio (160 marks) + Question paper (40 marks) National 4 Practical Activity (pass/fail)

National 5 – Art and Design Component 1 – portfolio set by centres within SQA guidelines conducted under some supervision and control submitted to SQA for marking equally weighted portfolio of practical art and design work (160 marks – 80/80) an edited focused selection of investigative research/development Unit work – supporting contextual evidence a final piece of expressive artwork and a design solution showing the creative realisation of their ideas an evaluation of their art and design work

National 5 Portfolio The portfolio will still need to be presented on sheets for external assessment The portfolio will still include an edited selection of practical art and design work completed in the Units. This work will be used to produce a final piece of expressive art and a design solution Candidates will now be required to show evidence of evaluation of both their expressive and design work in the portfolio. The edited selection of investigation/research and development Unit work has an overall mark. This approach is used in both sections of the portfolio

National 5 – Art and Design Component 2 – Question paper set and marked by SQA conducted in centres under conditions specified for external examinations by SQA 2 equally weighted sections (Expressive /Design) – 40 marks in total (20/20) extended response questions 2 mandatory questions drawing on their knowledge of artists and designers work and practice 2 optional questions based on describing/analysing and responding to one from a choice of images

National 4 Added Value Unit A practical activity in which the learner will produce a piece of expressive art and a design idea – set by centres within SQA guidelines – conducted under some supervision and control – evidence will be internally marked by centre staff in line with SQA guidelines. – all assessment subject to quality assurance by SQA.

National 4 Added Value Unit National 4 Added Value Unit Art and Design Practical Activity focuses on both the process and products of learning selecting with support from the assessor two development ideas from their Unit work planning/thinking about how they will realise the chosen ideas Developing and refining the chosen development ideas when producing their art and design work reflecting on their art and design work
