Helping Youth Make Career Decisions Welcome to this presentation, CareerOneStop – Find your Pathway to Career Success CareerOneStop is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration (ETA). This presentation is intended to provide you with brief information on ETA initiatives and its sponsored electronic tools to assist you and your organization in developing talent and becoming competitive leaders for the 21st century. This presentation is focused on pathways to career success. I will: * Introduce you to the U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Mission or (ETA) * Describe WIRED, one of ETA’s foundational principles, for regional economic development and talent development * Provide an overview of CareerOneStop and highlight various online resources * Present other ETA online resources such as Workforce3One, Career Voyages and O*NET and * Answer any questions you may have about CareerOneStop and partner online resources. By the end of this presentation, you will gain valuable knowledge, resources, and conceptual models to enhance your effectiveness as a strategic leader and service provider in your local area. Workshop Description October 31, 2017 Helping Youth Make Career Decisions  3:15 pm - 4:30 pm          Colorado   Workshop Summary:     Helping youth connect to successful career paths requires access to, and an understanding of, labor market information and trends.  Furthermore, many of today's best career options don't require a four-year degree—yet it can be hard to plot a course to a good-paying job via other credentials. The U.S. Department of Labor's GetMyFuture.org website offers simple resources and tips, including videos, to encourage and inspire youth and to empower them to make career decisions that are right for them. In this workshop, participants will walk through a variety of scenarios related to identifying and selecting the appropriate training options for a wide range of youth—including those without a high-school degree, those with disabilities, criminal records, and other barriers to success.  CWDP Competencies:    Career Development Process; Labor Market Information (LMI); Program Management Learning Objectives: Participants will learn something they didn’t know about training options available to youth; Participants will learn how to use GetMyFuture.org with youth, and find curriculum to aid their work; Participants will in increase their ability to be effective by learning about free tools, resources Presenter(s):     Sandy Donovan is the content manager for the U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration's CareerOneStop suite of websites, based in St. Paul, Minnesota. Sandy has a master's degree in public policy from the Humphrey Institute at the University of Minnesota. She has a background in labor policy and journalism. Bill McMahon is the Project Manager of CareerOneStop, where he oversees the development and maintenance of project websites and tools. A passionate advocate for effective technology for workforce development, Bill works closely with project sponsor, the U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration. Bill has a master’s degree in Urban Planning from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
