2 Agenda Introduction to CIS (10 min)
History Career & Education Development How Access & Accounts Work Resources in the student side of CIS (80 min) Questions / Discussion (30 min) Overview of CIS & who we are as an organization A bit about our history And our basis in career development I’ll talk some about how access to the system and accounts work, but I want to focus on the conceptual side of how you might use the Career Plan

3 History Oregon CIS was the first Career Information Delivery System and served as the model for a national network. Oregon CIS is a non-profit consortium operated as an outreach unit out of the University of Oregon’s College of Education. We provide a career development website that students can use to explore the world of work, set career and education goals, and plan to meet those goals. Oregon CIS served as the model for the US Department of Labor to create a Career Information Delivery System in every state. Today, many states work together to provide comprehensive career planning information. Oregon CIS receives national information and programming, but specializes in providing detailed information about Oregon’s schools, programs of study, industries, and occupations. We have analysts that review and update all the information in CIS at least yearly. For example, this includes updating descriptions of all the programs of study for all licensed and accredited schools in Oregon and reviewing and updating information about occupations, such as wages and employment outlook down to the regional level in Oregon. Information in CIS includes: - Current employment data, wages, outlook, hiring practices, licensing. - Descriptions of every accredited or licensed postsecondary program of study or training offered in Oregon. Also school information for Oregon schools and national ones. - Complete list of over 1100 scholarships in Oregon. - Information about self-employment, job searching, industries, and the military as an employer.

4 We partner with a variety of organizations in Oregon:
Of most interest to you: In general: keeping up with Oregon-specific legislation and state initiatives. CIS does not license in any other states, so we’re completely focused on Oregon. Oregon State Library: Learning Express: practice tests and skill-building tools OSAC: links CIS portfolio content to the OSAC Activities Chart, which enables faster application to OSAC scholarships

5 Accounts: Accessing CIS
Site Administrator Student Portfolio Staff Account Administrative & Student-side access Student-side access only Site-level access Non-portfolio student-side access Once a school licenses CIS, we set that school up with access to the system and give the Site Administrator top-level administrative access for their school. Site Administrator: The primary contact for CIS at the school. Ability to reset student passwords Create, merge, and transfer portfolios Run reports on student progress View content of student portfolios, including the career plan student reflections and goals CIS receives requests for student pw resets—send to SA Because of federal privacy laws like FERPA & COPPA, we don’t deal directly with student data. We provide the Site Admin and Staff with reports, tools for customizing CIS, and support for using CIS. Can create staff accounts. Staff Accounts: Created by the Site Administrator to give other staff members access to the administrative side of CIS: Can do everything the SA can do, EXCEPT: Create other Staff Accounts Manage the Course Planner Student Portfolios Created by the Site Admin or Staff, or by the student themselves Students can save information to their portfolio, such as Results from interest and skills assessments Favorite occupations, programs, schools, and scholarships Reflections and goals as they complete the Career Plan Documentation of the Career-Related Learning Experiences Results from occupation sorting tools Results from financial aid searches (over 1100 Oregon-specific scholarships) Resume information in the Resume Creator 20 MB of personal storage for documents Site-level access Non-portfolio access to CIS. 6 Career-Related Learning & Work
Career Development Curriculum Self-Knowledge Research & Goals Education Plans Career-Related Learning & Work Action & Reflection One of the ways that students access the information in CIS is by using the Career Plan. The Career Plan curriculum is built on the cycle of career development. Students learn early on how to explore the world of work on their own and develop skills for engaging with their own career development. The cycle of career development: Student’s learn about themselves Research interests and develop goals Make education and career plans Gain career-related learning & work Take action Throughout these steps, students complete reflections that help them learn and engage. - The Career Plan, when continued in high school, also fulfills Oregon’s Personalized Learning Requirements. - Each school chooses to use parts or all of the Career Plan and then use Checklists to track student progress.

7 Personalized Learning Requirements > CIS
Education Plan A formalized plan that involves students in their own learning and career development in grades 7-12. Education Profile Documentation of student progress toward the grad requirements, goals, and the education plan. Career-Related Learning Experiences Structured educational experiences that connect learning to the world beyond the classroom. Extended Application The application of knowledge and skills in context of the student’s personal and career interests and post-high school goals. Career Plan Résumé Creator & Course Planner How CIS meets ODE requirements. CRLE Planner Senior Project / EA Planner

8 Project ACCESS (VR Curriculum)
Publish in Fall 2016 Sort-able Self-Advocacy Disability

9 Discovery & Passage We’ve also created Discovery & Passage, which is a huge repository of lesson plans for teachers to download and modify for use in the classroom. Teachers can sort based on several criteria to find lesson plans they might want to use. Many of these lesson plans help students think about themselves, set goals, and plan to achieve those goals. We provide Power Points, Word documents, and PDF documents for teachers to download and modify, as well as instructions for using the lesson plans.

10 Discovery & Passage For example, here’s an activity designed to help students research post-secondary schools that interest them. Students can use School Sort in CIS as part of researching post-secondary schools.
