Title I Program What is Title I? Federal funds to provide programs to help children who are struggling in reading and math. Provides help in addition to what they learn during reading time in the classroom. This funding was provided under No Child Left Behind. Reauthorization under Every Students Succeeds Act (ESSA). Recent changes at the Pennsylvania Department of Education level have created more flexibility yet more accountability for Title I schools.

Types of Title I Programs Targeted Assistance: These students are identified for the program based on assessment performance only. Hahntown Elementary Stewartsville Elementary Schoolwide: All students can be supported with Title I resources. Sheridan Terrace Elementary – 6th year

Parents’ Rights (NCLB) ESSA Parents Right to Know - You can request teacher information at any time. You will be notified if your child is taught for more than 4 weeks by a teacher who is not highly qualified. You may request a meeting with any staff member to discuss concerns and make suggestions. You have the right to participate in decisions relating to the education of your child. You are encouraged to review the annual application for Title I and make suggestions. Knowing the achievement data of the schools and children.

Take-Aways… ELA curriculum is aligned to the PA Core Standards. Current instructional practices and ELA materials are meeting the needs of most students. The number of students who are not successful on the PSSA in ELA is declining.

Burning Questions… What instruments will tell us the information we need to know about students and their learning? What practices for student progress monitoring will help us determine if students are becoming more and more successful? How can we make sure “Transition Night” still meets parents’ needs?

2016-2017 Title I Parent Survey 66% of respondents request and use parent resources from the Parent Resource Center. 62% of respondents feel that teachers should continue to learn about reading and writing instruction within a “workshop” framework. 50% of respondents would like teachers’ skills to be strengthened in the area of using assessment data to progress monitor their children’s achievement. 50% report they would like to attend informational workshops on the transition to the next grade level and how to connect the skills of reading and writing.

Take-Aways… We believe that, through writing, students can strengthen their literacy skills. Teachers will need continued professional development in the area of writing instruction. Parents may need additional resources on the topic of writing.

Burning Questions… How can we strengthen our skills in meeting individual student needs? How can we better come to know what students need? What other resources will help us identify and reach individual students?
