Education, employment and training for 16 – 18 yr olds May 2016

What jobs are likely to be available in Manchester over the next 10 years?

What skills do employers want? As well as strong academic and vocational qualifications, employers also want people with “softer” skills and qualities. These can include:

Do you want to work in Financial and Professional Services? Greater Manchester has the UK's largest Financial and Professional services sector outside of London. The industry has continued to grow rapidly and we expect thousands of new jobs in this sector to be created over the coming years. Manchester attracts global companies due to the talent of Manchester’s people and the reputation of the city. As well as large multi-national firms there are a wide range of smaller local companies in more specialist industries.

Case Study: Aesha – Business Administration Apprentice Aesha is taking an Intermediate level apprenticeship in Business Administration with an international financial services company with offices in Manchester. As part of her role Aesha helps to put together financial information about her team’s performance for senior managers. The experience she has gained on the team will soon allow her to apply for a higher grade role. “Embarking on my apprenticeship has given me the opportunity to get my career started. The things I’ve learned and the people I’ve met mean I now have the opportunity to progress further.”

Do you want a future in Financial and Professional Services? There are a huge range of careers in the industry, and while many require you to be good with numbers, there’s a whole range of jobs for people with soft and transferable skills. The Financial and Professional Services industry will continue to be a key growth sector for Manchester and we expect thousands of new jobs to be created in the coming years. The sector is renowned for rewarding talent and hard work regardless of background and can offer potential lucrative rewards.
