(Can you tell me what the 1st letters of the 1st 4 words spell?)

History of Volleyball IS OVER 100 YEARS Old – Fun Fact: I was 18 years old when volleyball celebrated it’s 100th birthday IS CONSIDERED A NET GAME– Fun Fact: Morgan “borrowed” the net idea from the game of tennis

History of Volleyball ORIGINAL NAME: Mintonette Fun Fact: While watching the game being played, another professor at the college suggested another name… Volley Ball. Thank goodness it stuck! 1st VOLLEYBALL: Tried a basketball, but was too hard; tried the inside but it was too soft Fun Fact: Because Morgan couldn’t find a ball he could use, he enlisted the help of a local sporting goods manufacture by the name of A.G. Spalding THEN NOW

Volleyball Game Specs: PURPOSE: To use the skills of volleyball get to 25 points before the other team Main Offensive Strategy - To put the ball where the other team IS NOT! Main Defensive Strategy - To keep the ball from hitting the floor within the boundaries of your court!

Volleyball Game Specs: COURT: 60 x 30 Each Team plays on 30 x 30 side NET HEIGHT: Men: 7’ 11” Women: 7’ 4”

Volleyball Game Specs: PLAYERS: 6 players on each court 3 front row and 3 back row CONTACTS: 3 contacts before the ball must go over to the net

Volleyball Game Specs: SCORING: Rally Scoring Regulation match can be the best 2 of 3 games or 3 of 5 games Score to 25 points Score to 15 points for tie-breaker game Must win by 2 points

Volleyball Game Specs: RULES OVERVIEW If the offensive team’s ball travels outside of the court boundaries, it is considered “OUT” and the point is awarded to the opposing team. If the offensive team’s ball touches any part of the court boundary line, it is considered “IN” and the point is awarded to their team. You may only contact the ball 3 times. You may not touch any part of the net. If 2 parts of your body contacts the ball in a row it is considered a “DOUBLE HIT” and the point is awarded to the other team. Rotation occurs each time a team regains the serve after having lost it. Always rotate CLOCKWISE facing the net.

Main Volleyball Skills: FOREARM PASSING: Using both arms joined together to make a platform for the ball to bounce off of. Must be in a low, ready, and stable position with arms held in front of your body One of the most used skills in volleyball AKA “Bumping” It all starts with a pass!

Main Volleyball Skills: OVERHEAD PASSING/SETTING: Using both hands simultaneously at your forehead area to push the ball up to set an attack. A Setter is similar to the quarterback on a football team, calling plays and making decisions in a split second. Can be used interchangeably with the forearm pass if the ball is at head height.

Main Volleyball Skills: OVERHAND SERVING: Using your dominate open hand to contact the ball at your highest point after tossing it up. Used to begin the game. The team that scores the point will continue to serve until the opposing team scores a point. Must be contacted behind the back outline in a regulation game.

Main Volleyball Skills: UNDERHAND SERVING: Using your dominate open hand to contact the ball at your waist area with a flat fist. Used to begin the game. The team that scores the point will continue to serve until the opposing team scores a point. Must be contacted behind the back outline in a regulation game. Good for beginners

Main Volleyball Skills: HITTING/ATTACKING: Usually the third contact and happens after being set by a setter. Used to put the ball away as quickly as possible so that it can not be returned. Use a big open hand (similar to overhand serving), a number of progressive steps to gain speed, then jumping to contact the ball as high as possible, while “snapping” the ball down.

Main Volleyball Skills: DIGGING: Is basically forearm passing an attacked ball that is traveling at a much faster speed. Involves absorbing speed and force off of the ball May involve collapsing to the ground. Is a defensive skill

Variations of Volleyball: What is Sitting Volleyball? There are many variations of volleyball played around the globe. Some are: Grass Volleyball, Sand Volleyball, Indoor Volleyball, Wallyball, and Sitting Volleyball. “Sitting volleyball (sometimes known as Paralympic volleyball), is volleyball for disabled athletes entered the Paralympic Games as a demonstration sport for amputees in 1976 in Toronto Canada and played as a medal sport thereafter.” (sittingvolleyball.org, 2014)
