Executive Summary The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) was administered to more than 3.2 million students last spring to measure student progress in learning new, more rigorous academic standards designed to prepare them for college and careers in the 21st Century. Smarter Balanced assessments that are administered to students in the spring consist of two parts. First, students take a computer adaptive assessment, which bases follow-up questions on a student’s answers in real time and gives a more accurate picture of a student’s progress than the paper and pencil test. For example, if a student answers a question correctly, she gets a more difficult question. If she answers it incorrectly, she gets an easier question. Students also complete a performance task that challenges their ability to apply their knowledge and skills to problems in a real-world setting. The two parts measure depth of understanding, writing, research and problem-solving skills more thoroughly than the multiple-choice, paper-based tests they replaced. Ventura County has an overall average of 36% of students who met or exceeded grade level standards in mathematics, an increase of 2%, and an overall average of 48% in English language arts/literacy, an increase of 4%. The state’s overall average of 37% in mathematics is an increase of 4% from 2015. In English language arts/literacy, 49% of students met or exceeded grade level standards, an increase of 5%. Mesa students continue to perform above the county and state averages in mathematics and English language arts/literacy. Mesa students showed the most gains across grade levels 3-8 in English language arts/literacy with an overall increase in performance of 5%, from 54% in 2015 to 59% in 2016. In mathematics, Mesa students averaged 50%, a decrease of 3% overall from 2015.

Here’s the thing… Mesa Union Student Participation In the spring of 2016, 410 Mesa Union students successfully completed the California Assessment Student Performance and Progress. Summative Assessment Results Compared to State and County Performance Mesa Union students consistently performed at all grade levels above the county and state averages on Standard Exceeded/Standard Met on the English Language Arts/Literacy and Mathematics assessments. Sixty percent of Mesa Union students in grades 4, 5, 7, and 8 met or exceeded standards in English language arts. Every grade level demonstrated growth in the number of students who met or exceeded standards in English language arts with grade 5 making the largest gain (+13%). Mesa Union School District, when compared to all school districts in Ventura County, ranks fifth in English language arts/literacy. Sixty percent of Mesa Union students in grade 8 met or exceeded standards in mathematics. There were increases in the number of students who met or exceeded standards in mathematics in grades 3 and 8. This year’s 4th, 7th, and 8th grade students showed an increase in the percent of students who met or exceeded standards in mathematics from the previous year.
When compared to all school districts in Ventura County, Mesa Union ranks third in the area of mathematics. Mesa Union Subgroup Performance In English language arts, subgroup performance among females, males, white, and Hispanic students increased or stayed the same as compared to their performance in 2015. Seventy-seven percent of white students met or exceeded grade level standards in English language arts. English Learners significantly increased their performance in English language arts from 13% to 29%, and 77% of reclassified students met or exceeded grade level standards for the second year. Sixty-five percent of reclassified students met or exceeded grade level standards in the area of mathematics. Economically disadvantaged students posted a gain of 11%, from 31% to 42%, of students who met or exceeded standards in English language arts. Inter-district students scored higher than in-district students in English language arts and mathematics. Overall, the CAASPP results show that Mesa Union students are making strong progress in the new standards. Mesa Union will continue to focus on reducing the number of students who did not achieve Standards Met on the English Language Arts/Literacy and Mathematics assessments, as well as narrowing the achievement gap of identified subgroups.
