2 Executive Summary For the second consecutive year, there was an increase in the percent of students meeting or exceeding standards in: English Language Arts Mathematics Grade Level Science History-Social Science Since 2007, the percent of students meeting or exceeding English Language Arts and Mathematics standards has increased for each of our numerically significant student groups: English Learner students Economically Disadvantaged students Students with disabilities Each of the 7 numerically significant ethnic student groups ARE CST Results

3 Executive Summary From 2007 to 2009, there have been mixed results regarding the district’s efforts in closing the ethnic achievement gaps in English Language Arts and Mathematics. English Language Arts Since 2007, the achievement gap in English Language Arts between White and African American students, regardless of economic status, has remained virtually unchanged. During this same period, the achievement gap in English Language Arts between White and Hispanic or Latino students has narrowed for non-economically disadvantaged students and widened for economically disadvantaged students. Mathematics Since 2007, the achievement gap in mathematics between White and African American students has widened for non-economically disadvantaged students and narrowed for economically disadvantaged students. During this same period, the achievement gap in mathematics between White and Hispanic or Latino students, regardless of economic status, has narrowed. ARE CST Results

4 Summary Findings – English Language Arts
Overall, 43% of our students met or exceeded grade level English Language Arts standards. This represents a 4 percentage point increase over 2008, and a 7 percentage point increase over 2007. For the second consecutive year, the percent of students meeting or exceeding standards in English Language Arts increased for nine of the 10 grade levels tested. Percent proficient increases: Grades 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 No percent proficient change: Grade 5 ARE CST Results

5 Summary Findings – Grade Level Mathematics
Overall, 50% of our students met or exceeded grade level mathematics standards. This represents a 4 percentage point increase over 2008, and a 5 percentage point increase over 2007. From 2008 to 2009, the percent of students meeting or exceeding standards in mathematics increased for five of the six grade levels tested. 6 Summary Findings – End-of-Course Mathematics
Overall, 23% of our students met or exceeded end-of-course mathematics standards. This represents a 4 percentage point increase from 2008, and a 5 percentage point increase from 2007. From 2008 to 2009, the percent of students meeting or exceeding end-of-course mathematics standards increased for three of the five subjects tested. From 2008 to 2009, the percent of students meeting or exceeding end-of-course science standards in science increased for one of the four subjects tested. Overall, 39% of our students met or exceeded grade level History-Social Science standards. This represents a 6 percentage point increase over 2008, and a 9 percentage point increase over 2007. From 2008 to 2009, the percent of students meeting or exceeding end-of-course science standards in science increased for both of the grade levels tested. From 2008 to 2009: there were significant (at least 5 percentage points) increases in the percent of students meeting or exceeding standards in mathematics at grade levels 6 and 7; there were modest increases in the percent of students meeting or exceeding standards in mathematics at grade levels 2, 3, and 4; and the percent of students meeting or exceeding standards in mathematics remained unchanged for grade 5 students.
