Elements in a Series Insert a comma between all items in a series Yes, even when there’s a conjunction

Combining Sentences Use a comma and a conjunction to join two independent clauses (two sentences)

Set off introductory elements If you start a sentence with a dependent clause followed by an independent clause – put a comma in between

Set off parenthetical elements When you interject unnecessary information (that doesn’t change the meaning of the sentence), put a comma before and a comma after what doesn’t need to be there

Separate coordinate adjectives When you have two or more adjectives describing the same noun – insert a comma between the adjectives

Set off quotes Use commas before and after you use quotation marks in a sentence
