Colonizing America SSUSH1: The student will describe European settlement in North America during the 17th century. a. Explain Virginia’s development: include the Virginia Company, tobacco cultivation, relationships with Native Americans such as Powhatan, development of the House of Burgesses, Bacon’s Rebellion, & the development of slavery.

Why did the Spanish come to the New World? Goals: Colonize Christianize Conquer 3Gs GOD GLORY GOLD

Spanish Explorers & the Colonies Spanish in the Americas Spanish conquistadors explored, conquered Native Americans, & started new colonies Forced Native Americans to work on farms & in mines, thus making the Spanish richer Did build missions & tried to convert Native Americans to Christianity, specifically the Roman Catholic religion & they forced Native Americans to adopt European ways

English Colonies in America

English: Why did the English colonize? Wanted bases in North America for their privateers (ships); for protection against the Spanish Wanted to find a Northwest Passage through North America to the Indies Wanted new markets for their products Overcrowding in England & people were looking for good jobs

Turning Points in Europe: what was going on? Reformation Divides Europe into Catholic & Protestant Many will leave for religious reasons Economic Changes Enclosure movement: A change from renting land to kicking tenants off land to raise sheep for profit; former tenants became unemployed & poor, which made the colonies more appealing(attractive) Types of Colonies Royal-under the rule of the British monarch Joint stock-investors combining their funds for large projects Proprietary-owned by a person or group of people who could make laws & rule it as they wished

Roanoke Disaster Sir Walter Raleigh (nickname Sea Dog) He tried twice to start a colony on an island off of the coast of what is today North Carolina 1st colony – did not work – starvation, & eventually the colonists abandoned the colony 2nd colony – is a mystery – the leader left to return to England for supplies & when he returned he could not find any colonists at all, they had disappeared

First Permanent English Settlement in the Colonies Jamestown, Virginia

Jamestown Colony-Virginia Businessmen get a charter from King James I Started as a joint-stock company-funded by investors-these investors formed the Virginia Company & set up the Jamestown colony Area of the new colony was swampy-mosquitos; settlers argued & were lazy; starvation & sickness set in John Smith became the leader, he was injured & had to return to England 4,000 settlers died as a result and King James I took over Began to cultivate(prepare soil for crops) tobacco to make money- saved the colony Jamestown was then governed by the king- it becomes a royal colony Jamestown colony began to govern themselves-England did not have the money to enforce its wishes & the king was so far away So the colonists created a legislature in the Jamestown colony-the 1st governing body in the New World-House of Burgesses

Relationship with Native Americans and the development of Slavery Powhatan-Native American Chief who helped the colonists of Jamestown get through the first 2 winters Indentured servants-poor, young, white Passage to the colonies was paid by a master Were contracted to work for 7 years; very few did As the colony grew so did the tensions between Native American groups & the colonists; colonists started pushing west Development of slavery As the colonies grew so did the need for slaves – why? Native Americans did not have any immunities to European diseases & were dying off Colonists began to look to Africa as a way to fulfill this lost labor source Colonists did not want to do the hard labor the crops required

Bacon’s Rebellion: colonists fight back Details Nathaniel Bacon raised an army to fight the Native Americans because he wanted the land on Virginia’s frontier (wilderness land) Bacon & his followers turned against the governor of Virginia & burned Jamestown Bacon died suddenly of dysentery & the rebellion crumbled Conclusion Colonists were not willing to tolerate abusive government against poor farmers or governments that were not concerned with their interests
