Sheep Terms

Male Uncastrated Ram Male Castrated Wether Female who has had a baby Ewe Female who hasn’t had a baby under a year old Ewe Lamb You sheep under 1 year of age Lamb

Mutton – meat from an ovine that is over 14 months Ovis aries- scientific name for sheep Gestation- the time between conception and birth In sheep 5 months (150 days) In Humans 9 months (280 days) Parturition- Process of giving birth. In sheep also known as lambing What would it be called with Elk? Dogs? Dystocia- abnormalities in birth, trouble with birthing process

Shearing- Removal of wool from Crutching- shear the wool from the animal’s dock and rear legs Docking- Removal of tail to protect the animal from infection and disease. Bummer Lamb- Lamb that is rejected by the mother Grafting- Transferring and orphan or rejected lamb to a ewe other than its mother. Gregarious-Highly sociable animals that like to be in groups, safety in numbers

Prolificacy- High Producing of young Flight Zone- Personal bubble, the zone that an animal will move once penetrated. The degree of eye sight sheep have is 270 degrees

Predator- Species of animal that lives by killing and eating other animals 1. Tend to have eyes placed inside with narrow fields of vision. 2. Have improved depth perception

Prey- species of animal that is hunted and killed by another animal for food. 1. Eyes are usually located on the outside of the head. 2. Each eye can generally cover a wider angle of view. This allows prey species to view more than 270 degree field.
