1 Livestock Terminology

2 Terminology Gestation Length: the time of conception to the time of birth. Castration: the removal of the male sex organs, testicals.

3 Swine (Porcine) 3 mos. 3 wks. 3 days gestation
Boar – a male swine that has not been castrated. Sow – an older female swine that has farrowed or is showing signs of pregnancy. Boar pig - a young male swine before reaching sexual maturity. Gilt – a young female swine that has not farrowed and is not showing any signs of pregnancy. Barrow – a male swine castrated while young, in which physical traits of the boar have not developed. Piglet – a general term for young swine. Farrowing – Term for giving birth in swine.

4 Sheep (Ovine)5 month gestation
Ram – a male sheep that has not been castrated. Ewe – a female sheep after reaching sexual maturity. Ram Lamb - a young male sheep before reaching sexual maturity. Ewe Lamb - a young female sheep before reaching sexual maturity. Wether – a male sheep that has been castrated. Lamb – general term for young in sheep. Lambing – term for giving birth in sheep.

5 Cattle (Bovine) 9 month gestation
Bull – adult male bovine that has not been castrated. Cow – a female bovine that has had one or more calves; or an older cow that has not had a calf but has matured. Bull Calf – a male bovine before reaching sexual maturity. Heifer – a female bovine that has not had a calf. Steer – a male bovine animal that was castrated before reaching sexual maturity. Calf – a general term for young bovine. Calving – term for giving birth in cattle.

6 Horse (Equine) 11 month gestation
Stallion – a mature male horse four years of age or older. Mare – a mature female horse, four years of age or older. Colt – a male horse less than three years of age. Filly – a female horse under three years of age. Gelding – a male horse that has been castrated. Foal – a young horse of either sex up to one year of age. Foaling – term for giving birth in horses.

7 Chicken (Avian) Rooster – a male of domestic chicken. Hen – a female of domestic chicken. Cockerel - A feathered out rooster that is less than one year old. Pullet - A laying hen that is less than one year old. Capon – a male chicken that has been surgically castrated. Chick - A chicken from the time of hatch until approximately the time they feather out. Laying - chicken do not give live birth they lay eggs that then, if fertilized, hatch 21 days after laying

8 Duck (Anserine) Drake – a male of domestic duck. Duck or Hen – a female of domestic duck. Young Drake - A feathered out drake that is less than one year old. Young Duck - A laying hen that is less than one year old. Capon – a male duck that has been surgically castrated. Duckling - A duck from the time of hatch until approximately the time they feather out. Laying – ducks do not give live birth they lay eggs that then, if fertilized, hatch 28 days after laying (Muscovy 35 days)

9 Turkey (Avian) Tom – a male of domestic turkey. Hen – a female of domestic turkey. Young Tom- A feathered out tom that is less than one year old. Young Hen - A laying female that is less than one year old. Capon – a male turkey that has been surgically castrated. Poult - A turkey from the time of hatch until approximately the time they feather out. Laying – turkeys do not give live birth they lay eggs that then, if fertilized, hatch 28 days after laying

10 Rabbits (Lagomorph) Buck – a male of domestic rabbit. Doe – a female of domestic rabbit. Jr. Buck - A young male rabbit. Jr. Doe - A young female rabbit. Lapin – a male rabbit that has been surgically castrated. Kit - A rabbit from the time of birth until weaning. Kindling – giving birth, gestation is 31 days.

11 Goat (Caprine) 5 month gestation
Buck – a male goat that has not been castrated. Doe – a female goat. Buckling - a male goat before reaching sexual maturity Doeling - a female before reaching sexual maturity Wether - a male goat that has been castrated before reaching sexual maturity. Kid – a general term for a young goat under one year of age of either sex. Kidding - term for giving birth in goats.

12 Geese (Anserine) Gander – a male of domestic goose. Goose– a female of domestic goose. Young Gander- A feathered out gander that is less than one year old. Young Goose- A laying female that is less than one year old. Capon – a male gander that has been surgically castrated. Gosling - A goose from the time of hatch until approximately the time they feather out. Laying – geese do not give live birth they lay eggs that then, if fertilized, hatch 28 days after laying (Larger breeds 35 days)

13 Humans (Homo sapien) 9 month gestation
Man – Adult male after sexual maturity. Woman – Adult female after sexual maturity. Boy – Young male before sexual maturity. Girl – Young female before sexual maturity. Eunuch – Castrated male. Child – General term for young. Childbirth – term for giving birth in humans.
