4 It’s a Proboscis Monkey Why is it called that you ask?? Because of its nose. Its large like a proboscis ( from the Greek word ‘proboscida’ meaning ‘trunk’)

5 Facts Diet: Omnivore (meat and vegetables) Predators: Clouded Leopard, Crocodile, Human Life Span: 15 - 20 years Nose: Females are smaller than Males Protection status: Endangered Type: Mammal Size relative to a (2m) man

6 WHERE DOES IT LIVE?? The proboscis monkey is found only on the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. Proboscis Monkey live almost exclusively in mangrove forests, near fresh water and in lowland rainforests. They can be found near rivers edges, resting and sleeping. Area around human settlements are completely avoided. They are mostly arboreal (tree living) but have been known to leave the trees in order to cross open ground.

7 What do they eat?? They eat leaves and Fruit They also have the ability to digest poisonous food.

8 Their Troops and Appearance?? The Proboscis Monkey is an incredibly sociable animal They live in troops that contain between 2 - 30 individuals and are comprised of a dominant male, with up to 10 females and their young. They have reddish-brown fur on their back and shoulders. Their chests are creamy. Their arms and legs have long, gray gloves and stockings. Orange fur cover their shoulders and a cap of darker red fur covers their head. They faces are flesh colored with small, intelligent brown eyes. There ears are small and lie flat against their heads

9 Reproduction Female Proboscis Monkeys give birth to a single infant after a gestation period that lasts for around five and a half months Young Proboscis Monkeys are cared for not just by their mother but also by the other adult females in the troop, and will remain with their mother until they are nearly a year old Proboscis Monkeys tend to live for up to 20 years in the wild and are not able to reproduce until they are at least four years old.
