Questions What similarities do you notice between the different cultural regions? What do you think caused these similarities? Read the timeline station cards and while you are reading draw arrows on your map that show the cultural connections between the cultural regions. What cultural regions can you infer had the largest impact on the world? Explain why.

Students in groups of 2-3. Each group gets ¼ of a poster. They are assigned one of the slides and they use the rubric to create a poster. They have 2 class periods. The 3rd day they will present and students will take notes over what they presented. As they present they will move the colored yarn on the map on the back wall to show the connections that led to the cultural regions.

Historical Timeline

Trade along the Silk Road As early as second century BC the Middle Eastern and Chinese merchants created a trade route over land with ancient China along the ‘Silk Road’. Over the years more merchants from distant lands began to trade along this route as well. European merchants from the Roman Empire began to trade with the Chinese and the Middle Eastern people groups. Over this route Chinese silk was introduced to Europe. In addition, to the exchange of goods such as silk, metal, chariots, and animals such as horses the people also exchanged languages, religions, and ideas.

Salt Trade From the 7th-11th century Western Africa and the Arabic Middle Eastern part of the world traded with one another. A large part of this trade was the salt that was mined in the salt mines in Timbuktu, Africa. These merchants traded goods, resources and even exchanged ideas, religions, and customs.

European and Chinese trade Around the 1200’s, at the time of the Middle Ages in Europe, Marco Polo journeyed to Asia with several other travelers. While Marco Polo was in China he was exposed to many new inventions. He discovered that China had developed gun powder, the compass and printing. European merchants like Marco Polo brought these new inventions back to Europe. The Europeans used the gunpowder for cannons and adapted the compass in order to travel across seas.

Columbian Exchange/Triangle Trade Europeans traveled from Europe to the Americas beginning in the 1400’s Europeans brought weapons, religion, ideas, steel, chickens, cows, pigs, and wheat. The Native Americans introduced the Europeans to new foods like tomatoes, chocolate, squash, potatoes, pumpkins, peanuts, and corn. Europeans also learned how to smoke and grow tobacco. The Europeans set up colonies in North and South America and claimed the land and the resources for their king.

American Colonies Independence After over 200 years of the colonies growing the colonists in north America declared independence in 1776 from Great Britain. After winning the American Revolution the colonists began to move westward and forced Native Americans to change their culture or move westward.

Imperialism During the 1800’s European nations set up colonies in Africa, Asia, and Australia. They claimed the land, used the resources and forced the native people to adapt to the European culture. European nations took control of people groups and societies by force in Africa, South America, South Asia and Australia. As they created these colonies the native people groups that lived there were often forced to change their native languages, religions, and customs for European ways of life.

North American Slave Trade From the 1500’s to the 1800’s the Europeans used their colonies in Africa to create the African Slave trade to the Americas. The Europeans captured, and traded Africans in both North and South America in order to force them into slavery. The majority of the African slaves worked on Plantations (large farms) planting and harvesting crops.

Chinese Immigration In the 1850’s thousands of Chinese immigrants crossed the Pacific ocean to come to the United States. The hope and promise of gold and a future caused many of the young men of China to leave their homes and make the treacherous journey to America. Many of the Chinese immigrants ended up working on the Trans-Continental railroad that was being built from the East and West of the United States.

European Immigration In the late 1800’s to early 1900’s there was a massive wave of immigrants from Europe. These people were seeking religious and political freedom, economic possibilities and the hope of a better future. People from Ireland, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Russia, Poland, and many other nations sought a better life in the United States. What cultural traits did all immigrant cultural groups bring with them to North America?

Immigrants from Mexico, Europe, Asia, and Africa In the 20th and 21st century the United States has seen a growth of immigration as people from Mexico, Europe, Asia and Africa seek economic, political, and religious freedom. Many individuals that desire to immigrate to the U.S. desire a better life for their families and hope for that dream to become a reality.

An old Italian saying summed up the disillusionment felt by many: "I came to America because I heard the streets were paved with gold. When I got here, found out three things: First, the streets weren't paved with gold; second, they weren't paved at all: and third, I was expected to pave them." In spite of the difficulties, few gave up and returned home.

In the 1400’s-1600’s European Explorers settled in North America. They were from Britain, Spain, and France. They created colonies where settlers began farming the land and building settlements. Many times the colonists would share ideas and goods with the Native peoples and learned about new foods. In 1776, the North American colonists declared Independence from Great Britain which led to the American Revolution. The colonists began to move westward and discovered new resources that they began to use. They also spread the word that the United States was a land of plenty and freedom. In the 180o’s there was a forced migration of Africans to North America. Thousands of Africans were forced into slavery and brought to the United States to work. They brought their languages, religions, cultural perceptions, and ideas with them. Many of the African people were forced to change their language to English, and follow the Christian religion. In the 1800- 1900s immigrants from all around the world including, China, Russia, Ireland, Germany and many other nations began to move to the United States. They were often seeking political, economic, and religious freedom. They brought their food, language, dress, religion, and ideas with them. In the last 50 years there has been an increase in immigration from many countries including Africa, Mexico and Eastern Europe. Many of these people are seeking political, economic, and religious freedom. They have brought their religions, ideas, perceptions, languages, and customs with them. North America
