Europeans bought spices from Asia. They wanted to find an easier, cheaper, and quicker way to get spices. Pepper, Cinnamon, and cloves were used to flavor and preserve food.

1400s, European countries are competing for power. One way to gain economic power was from natural resources in new lands.

10 Empire Building Portugal, Spain, England, and France explored and colonized building empires in the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Australia.

11 Portugal Empire Prince Henry the Navigator:
Portuguese Prince and naval commander that founded a school of navigation in 1450. He paid for expeditions to the west coast of Africa, and hired mapmakers to create detailed maps for his expeditions. He also hired ship makers to built lighter ships called caravels.

12 Portugal Empire Led the way in exploration
Began by exploring the west coast of Africa and established trade in gold and slaves. 1947: Navigator Vasco de Gama sailed around the Cape of Good Hope at the South of Africa and continued to India. First explorers to reach India by Sea

13 Portugal Empire Established settlements in Brazil in South America where they sold gold and sugar to Portugal. More interested in trade than taking over land and people

14 Spanish Empire Exploration was led by the Italian Christopher Columbus in 1492 Landed on the Caribbean Islands in an effort to reach Asia by a new route 1519: Spain paid for the voyage of Ferdinand Magellan who rounded the bottom of South America and landed in the Philippines. Proved that the Earth was round Explorers conquered the Inca and Aztec Empires in Peru and Mexico

15 Spanish Empire Spanish built the largest and strongest of the colonial empires Made a lot of money from the gold and silver they found in the Americas and used it to finance wars and buy Asian spices, silk, and cloth. Spreading the Catholic Religion was also a large part of Colonization 1400s – 1500s Spain also creates small settlements along North African coast to protect trade.

16 British Empire One of the most powerful empires in world history, controlled 1/5 of the worlds land 1600s – 1700s established tobacco plantations in the Caribbean Islands and coast of North America Many colonist came to America seeking religious freedom 1600: chartered the East India Company to trade in the East Indies. Took over India in 1858. 1600s: First explored Australia. Established a strong colonial presence in the late 1700s

17 British Empire Mercantilism: economic policy where the colonies helped the mother country by providing valuable natural resources and a market for the goods produced in the mother country. major reason England established colonies. Caused the American rebellion

18 French Empire Samuel de Champlain founded the colony of Quebec as a trading post in Traveled down the Mississippi River and claimed the central part of the US. 18th century: France controlled Canada, Louisiana, and islands in the Caribbean, part of India, and West African coast. Interested in spreading their religion.
