8 What is The Columbian Exchange?
Voyages by Christopher Columbus to North America helped the development of the Columbian Exchange. Exchange of plants, animals, technology, ideas and disease from the Old World and the New World. Connected the continents in amazing ways. This changed the lives of people in Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas.

9 How it all began… Took place in 1492.
Christopher Columbus hoped to find a faster trade route between Europe and Asia. King and Queen loved the news Columbus bought back about the New World. Wanted to make Spain richer and more powerful.

10 Explorers Goals.. Explore the New Land.
They found gold and excellent land to settle. The more land each country claimed, the rich and more powerful they became.

11 What did the Old World Bring ?
European settlers introduced: Wheat Rice Coffee Horses Pigs Cows Chickens Horses improved the way Native Americans moved and hunted.

12 Native Americans taught Europeans…
How to grow: Corn Potatoes Peanuts Tomatoes Squash. This was all done working alongside one another. Europeans took these crops home (Old World) and it greatly improved their diet.

European explorers conquered (took over) the native people of the new world and introduced them to Christianity.

16 Negative Effects of the Columbian Exchange.
Diseases carried by explorers and settlers killed many Native Americans. Measles Smallpox Malaria When these Native Americans passed away, the demand for African slaves increased.
