Canada’s Response to War Canada At War Canada’s Response to War The Axis and the Allies Battle of the Atlantic Barbarossa Pearl Harbor

Canada’s Response Britain declare war on Germany when Germany invaded Poland (tipping point) Canada now needs to make a decision (Britain ASKED Canada to help) Canada’s mind (people / PM) – Isolationists (isolate-alone, independant) = Wanted to stay out of WW2 No Sacrifice of lives (don’t risk lives) Believed Treaty of Versailles was unfair WW2 did not involve or threaten Canada

King really liked Hitler! <3 Canada was also involved: Did not accept Jewish Refugees Because of the “unemployment” problem in Canada Nazi Gov’t thought Jews were inferior (and downgraded the master race..Germans) Nazi’s Separated Jewish from germans Blamed struggle of Germany on Jews Holocaust

The Axis Germany Italy Japan Adolph Hitler Benito Mussolini Emperor Hirohito Never fought in Europe Philippines & Pearl Harbour

Appeasement 1938 – Britain says “We have secured peace for our time” Munich agreement – Hitler could take over part of Czechoslovakia & promise to cease aggression BUT…1939…Did Hitler “cease aggression”?...No, he took over ALL of Czechslovaki…War is inevitable All but 1 MP agreed Canada should go to war

The Allies France 1939 Britain 1939 Russia 1941 United States 1941 Churchill Russia 1941 Josef Stalin United States 1941 Roosevelt Canada 1939 Mackenzie King France 1939

WHY DID Canada Go to War? WW2 could stimulate Canadian economy (just like WW1) Produce more goods Increase National Identity Germany is becoming a serious threat to the World (and Canada’s friends / Allies) “Friends” (Allies) help friends One day, Canada might need help…

Battle of the Atlantic The struggle to control the supply route for the Allies across the Atlantic Ocean Allies used Convoys and escort ships called Corvettes from the Royal Canadian Navy Germans used U-Boats (submarines) to attack ships
