HOW WE ELECT THE PRESIDENT AND/OR REPLACE HIM/HER CHAPTER 13 SECTIONS 3-5 HOW WE ELECT THE PRESIDENT AND/OR REPLACE HIM/HER

The Electoral Process Each state chooses electors who are responsible for casting a vote to tell Congress who their state chooses to be the president. Each state’s electors are equal to the number of Representatives & Senators. This process elects the President by state, not individual.

Why don’t we use popular vote?

Example of popular vote: IL-20 mil IN-6 mil OH-18 mil

POPULAR VOTE - EXAMPLE Illinois – 20 million people Democrat = 15 million Republican = 5 million Indiana – 6 million people Democrat = 2 million Republican = 4 million Ohio – 18 million Democrat = 8 million Republican = 10 million Democrats = 25 million votes - WINNER Republican = 19 million votes

ELECTORAL PROCESS- EXAMPLE – Winner Takes All Illinois – 20 million people Democrat = 15 million Republican = 5 million Electoral Votes = 21 Indiana – 6 million people Democrat = 2 million Republican = 4 million Electoral Votes = 11 Ohio – 18 million Democrat = 8 million Republican = 10 million Electoral Votes = 20 Democrats = 21 Electoral Votes (25 M) Republican = 31 Electoral Votes (19 M)- WINNER

ELECTORAL VOTES TOTAL ELECTORAL VOTES = 100 Senators + 435 House members + 3 Washington DC Reps = 538 Electoral Votes TOTAL NEEDED TO WIN = Majority = 270 Electoral Votes

How do we get to that point? (p382)

How long can a President serve? 22nd Amendment – 2 terms If a Vice President takes over with 2 or fewer years left in the presidency, then he can be re- elected to 2 more terms. So what is the longest time a president can actually serve?
