2 Electoral College – Today – New Way The electoral college elects the president – NOT THE DIRECT or “POPULAR” VOTE! Step 1: The people (18 years and older) go out and vote! – popular vote Step 2: the electors from each state looks at the popular vote and cast the electoral vote It is a WINNER TAKE ALL system!

3 Electoral College – Today – New Way Who makes up the Electoral college?? Simple: Representatives + Senators + 3 = Total number of electors!! House of Representatives = 435 Senators = 100 3- from Washington DC Total =538

4 Electoral College – Today – New Way Winner –Take – All system The candidate that wins the popular vote gets all the electoral votes of the state A candidate needs 270 electoral votes to win.

5 Electoral votes per state
