A Study of Romans

Last Week: – Is there a basis for morality? A Study of Romans

We’re all in the same boat, we’re just using different paddles as we row the boat in circles! A Study of Romans

Ch. 1 – Rejecting God leads to idolatry and immorality A Study of Romans

Romans 2 Therefore, any one of you who judges is without excuse. For when you judge another, you condemn yourself, since you, the judge, do the same things.

What is going on here? Romans 2 Therefore, any one of you who judges is without excuse. For when you judge another, you condemn yourself, since you, the judge, do the same things. What is going on here?

Romans 2 Therefore, any one of you who judges is without excuse. For when you judge another, you condemn yourself, since you, the judge, do the same things.

RELIGIOUS RIGHTEOUSNESS (A different form of rebellion) Romans 2 Therefore, any one of you who judges is without excuse. For when you judge another, you condemn yourself, since you, the judge, do the same things. RELIGIOUS RIGHTEOUSNESS (A different form of rebellion)

Why god hates religion Romans 2:1-11 May 8, 2016

Why god hates religion Romans 2:1-16 Not just a New Testament idea Why god hates religion Romans 2:1-16 May 8, 2016

Amos 5 21 I hate, I despise your feasts!

Amos 5 21 I hate, I despise your feasts! I can’t stand the stench of your solemn assemblies.

Amos 5 21 I hate, I despise your feasts! I can’t stand the stench of your solemn assemblies. 22 Even if you offer Me your burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them; I will have no regard for your fellowship offerings of fattened cattle.

Amos 5 21 I hate, I despise your feasts! I can’t stand the stench of your solemn assemblies. 22 Even if you offer Me your burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them; I will have no regard for your fellowship offerings of fattened cattle. 23 Take away from Me the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps.

Amos 5 The people were religiously devoted 21 I hate, I despise your feasts! The people were religiously devoted

The people were prosperous Amos 5 21 I hate, I despise your feasts! The people were prosperous

The people were under God’s judgment Amos 5 21 I hate, I despise your feasts! The people were under God’s judgment

Why does God hate religion? Amos 5 21 I hate, I despise your feasts! I can’t stand the stench of your solemn assemblies. 22 Even if you offer Me your burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them; I will have no regard for your fellowship offerings of fattened cattle. 23 Take away from Me the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps. Why does God hate religion?

I will not listen to the music of your harps. Religion = relying upon our own goodness for our identity (and usually to earn God’s acceptance)

Romans 2 Therefore, any one of you who judges is without excuse. For when you judge another, you condemn yourself, since you, the judge, do the same things.

Matthew 7 “Do not judge, so that you won’t be judged. 2 For with the judgment you use, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. 3 Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye but don’t notice the log in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ and look, there’s a log in your eye? 5 Hypocrite! First take the log out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.

Don’t you judge those who are inside? 13 But God judges outsiders. Put away the evil person from among yourselves.

Romans 2 Therefore, any one of you who judges is without excuse. For when you judge another, you condemn yourself, since you, the judge, do the same things. 2 We know that God’s judgment on those who do such things is based on the truth.

God has the right to judge because He never sins or fails Romans 2 Therefore, any one of you who judges is without excuse. For when you judge another, you condemn yourself, since you, the judge, do the same things. 2 We know that God’s judgment on those who do such things is based on the truth. God has the right to judge because He never sins or fails

Romans 2 Therefore, any one of you who judges is without excuse. For when you judge another, you condemn yourself, since you, the judge, do the same things. 2 We know that God’s judgment on those who do such things is based on the truth. 3 Do you really think—anyone of you who judges those who do such things yet do the same—that you will escape God’s judgment?

Religious self-righteousness will come under God’s just judgment Romans 2 Therefore, any one of you who judges is without excuse. For when you judge another, you condemn yourself, since you, the judge, do the same things. 2 We know that God’s judgment on those who do such things is based on the truth. 3 Do you really think—anyone of you who judges those who do such things yet do the same—that you will escape God’s judgment?  Religious self-righteousness will come under God’s just judgment

Romans 2 4 Or do you despise the riches of His kindness, restraint, and patience, not recognizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?

Romans 2 4 Or do you despise the riches of His kindness, restraint, and patience, not recognizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?

Romans 2 4 Or do you despise the riches of His kindness, restraint, and patience, not recognizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance? Repentance destroys religion because it forces us to give up on our efforts to impress God and compare ourselves with others.

Romans 2 4 Or do you despise the riches of His kindness, restraint, and patience, not recognizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance? 5 But because of your hardness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath, when God’s righteous judgment is revealed.

Romans 2 6 He will repay each one according to his works: 7 eternal life to those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor, and immortality;

Romans 2 6 He will repay each one according to his works: 7 eternal life to those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor, and immortality;

Romans 2 6 He will repay each one according to his works: 7 eternal life to those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor, and immortality;  “Cool, this sounds better. If I’m just a good person, then I’ll be ok.”

Romans 2 8 but wrath and indignation to those who are self-seeking and disobey the truth but are obeying unrighteousness; 9 affliction and distress for every human being who does evil, first to the Jew, and also to the Greek; 10 but glory, honor, and peace for everyone who does what is good, first to the Jew, and also to the Greek.

Romans 3:23 -- For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. 8 but wrath and indignation to those who are self-seeking and disobey the truth but are obeying unrighteousness; 9 affliction and distress for every human being who does evil, first to the Jew, and also to the Greek; 10 but glory, honor, and peace for everyone who does what is good, first to the Jew, and also to the Greek. Romans 3:23 -- For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

11 There is no favoritism with God.

Romans 5:8 -- But God proves His own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us!

Conclusions Religion gets us as close to God as immorality does Religion produces self-righteous condemnation of others Only God has the right to judge (condemn) Repentance is the path to freedom & hope This message is TOTALLY UNIQUE to Christianity (other religions ARE religions) Have you accepted what Jesus has done?
