3 Mercy Triumphs Over Judgment
By Pastor Fee Soliven James 2:5-13 Wednesday Evening June 7, 2017

4  5 Listen, my beloved brethren: Has God not chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him?

5 6 But you have dishonored the poor man
6 But you have dishonored the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you and drag you into the courts? 7 Do they not blaspheme that noble name by which you are called?

6 8 If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself," you do well;

7  9 but if you show partiality, you commit sin, and are convicted by the law as transgressors.

8  10 For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all.

9  11 For He who said, "Do not commit adultery," also said, "Do not murder." Now if you do not commit adultery, but you do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.

10  12 So speak and so do as those who will be judged by the law of liberty.

11 13 For judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy
13 For judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

12 5 Listen, my beloved brethren: Has God not chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him?

13 Mark 10:23 “Then Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, "How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!"

14 “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also”
Luke 12:34 “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also”

15 “that no flesh should glory in His presence”
1 Corinthians 1:29 “that no flesh should glory in His presence”

16 6 But you have dishonored the poor man
6 But you have dishonored the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you and drag you into the courts? 7 Do they not blaspheme that noble name by which you are called?

17 1 Corinthians 6: 1-6 1When one of you has a dispute with another believer, how dare you file a lawsuit and ask a secular court to decide the matter instead of taking it to other believers!  2 Don’t you realize that someday we believers will judge the world? And since you are going to judge the world, can’t you decide even these little things among yourselves?

18 3 Don’t you realize that we will judge angels
3 Don’t you realize that we will judge angels? So you should surely be able to resolve ordinary disputes in this life. 4 If you have legal disputes about such matters, why go to outside judges who are not respected by the church? 5 I am saying this to shame you. Isn’t there anyone in all the church who is wise enough to decide these issues? 6 But instead, one believer sues another—right in front of unbelievers!

19 8 If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself," you do well;

20 Matthew 22:37-40 37 Jesus said to him, " 'You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' 40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets."

21 Leviticus 19:18 “You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD”

22 Proverbs 14:20-21 20 The poor man is hated even by his own neighbor, But the rich has many friends. 21 He who despises his neighbor sins; But he who has mercy on the poor, happy is he.

23 9 but if you show partiality, you commit sin, and are convicted by the law as transgressors.

24 10 For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all.

25 Romans 3:19 “So the judgment of God lies very heavily upon the Jews, for they are responsible to keep God's laws instead of doing all these evil things; not one of them has any excuse; in fact, all the world stands hushed and guilty before Almighty God”

26 11 For He who said, "Do not commit adultery," also said, "Do not murder." Now if you do not commit adultery, but you do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.

27 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”
Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”

28 Romans 5:12-16 12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned-- 13(For until the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law.

29 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come. 15 But the free gift is not like the offense. For if by the one man's offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many.

30 16 And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned
16 And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned. For the judgment which came from one offense resulted in condemnation, but the free gift which came from many offenses resulted in justification.

31 12 So speak and so do as those who will be judged by the law of liberty.

32 1 John 3:18 “My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth”

33 13 For judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy
13 For judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

34 James: “Faith is dead without good deeds”
2. Paul: “We are made right with God through faith and not by obeying the law” (Romans 3:28).
