Pre-Departure Preparation For First Time International Travelers

Pre-Departure Checklist Make sure you have these documents with you before your departure to your host university and have left copies of them at home. Passport All necessary visa and entry documents Flight Itinerary & airline and other tickets Medical history and immunization records Diplomas and transcripts Birth and marriage certificates

Pre-Departure Checklist (continued) All papers for any accompanying dependents, including school certificates for children Important addresses and phone numbers Your temporary housing address, contact phone number and directions IFP award letter and contract Host Institution admission letter, contact numbers and other information

Pre-Departure Checklist (continued) Host country currency (advanced by IP pre-departure) Medicine and written prescriptions (if applicable) Extra passport photographs Photocopies of important documents, carried separately from Originals Also before you leave: Call your airline to reconfirm your reservation, and make seat selection. Clearly label your luggage with your name and address at the final destination.

Organize your packing Keep anything you use everyday in a small carry-on case (backpack) to bring onto the plane: Moneybelt, including host currency Documents (see Pre-Departure Checklist) Clothes and personal hygiene, in case you need to stay over or you have a long travel ahead Camera, handphone, sunglasses Walkman, books or something else to make you busy in the plane Snack, candies, etc.

Organize your packing (continued) Bring a strong big suitcase to pack the things you need during your study: Summer clothes and shoes/sandals Warm/winter clothes and shoes/sandals A set of traditional clothes A large and small towel Make-up/shaving supplies for the first month Personal hygiene for the first month First aid kit (common medicine) Chemical names of prescription drugs you use Books/materials for research

Organize your packing (continued) Dictionary Umbrella, raincoat Favorite recipes of Indonesian food Small packages of spices Pictures of your family Pictures, postcards or map of Indonesia Cassette/CD/VCD of Indonesian music Small souvenirs or gifts for “new” friends Family member measurement if you wish to buy gifts

Organize your packing (continued) Others: Besides labeling your baggage from the outside, also put a label inside Do not carry in your bags: swiss pocketknife, nail cutters, cutters and other sharp objects Watch out for the maximum weight of your baggage Keep your travel documents with you all the time

Departure Documents and Funding from IIEF: Grant Agreement Passport & visa Medical Check-up Ticket Itinerary Sponsor Letter TOEFL ITP/CBT Score IFP Insurance Beneficiary Form First Living Allowance & Settling-in Airport Tax & Fiscal Ground Transportation (if applicable)

To the airport Please arrange your departure from Wisma Daerah “Istana Ratu” at least 3 hours before take-off At the airport (usually Terminal 2), if the gate is already open, go to the flight gate number, according your ticket, and check-in by Showing your ticket and passport Pay the Airport Tax If you are going to change planes, ask the officer to check-in your luggage directly to your destination (check-in through) You will receive a boarding pass and baggage receipt. (Please check the arrival airport on the baggage receipt)

To the airport (continued) Pay the Fiscal at the fiscal counter and show your boarding pass and passport

To the airport (continued) At Boarding Time, go to the Immigration Counter to check-in to your flight. Please notice your Boarding Pass to make sure which Boarding Gate you must enter

The Flight Jet lag due to crossing many time zones To get over the jet lag, try to sleep according to the local time, wear comfortable clothes and drink a lot but avoid carbonized drinks During stop over, you might want to go to the transit lounge especially if it’s a long stop (a couple of hours) At arrival, have your documents ready
