Job Roles in the Music Industry By: Johnathan Page Very well done!

What is the role of a Performer Pt.1 Musicians or performers play a part in creating and/or performing music in a variety of genres. They can be composers, instrumentalists and/or singers who perform either in the studio or in a live audience. Musicians may work as freelance artists, in collaboration with others, or as a paid member of a: orchestra; opera company; choir; theatrical ensemble; band. Competition in the musical field is high and musicians need to dedicate hours of practice to maintain and develop their skill, depending on their own style. They may need to diversify and branch out into other styles of music in order to enhance their employability. Most musicians have a need to perform/compose through their strong love of music.

What is the role of a Performer Pt.2 One of Swift's earliest musical memories is listening to her maternal grandmother, Marjorie Finlay, sing at church. In her youth, Finlay was a television host in Puerto Rico, and performed in operas in Thailand and Singapore. As a very young child, Swift enjoyed Disney movie soundtracks: "My parents noticed that, once I had run out of words, I would just make up my own.” Later, her parents exposed her to artists such as James Taylor, Simon & Garfunkel and Def Leppard. Swift has said she owes her confidence to her mother, who helped her prepare for class presentations as a child. She also attributes her "fascination with writing and storytelling" to her mother. You are missing some further information of why Taylor Swift is now considered a greater artist. What has she done? Accomplished? Such as # of albums produced, # of sales, tours, awards. What else does she do? Eg Acting, dancing, playing a musical instrument and songwriting.

What is the role of a Marketing Manager in the Music Industry The marketing Managers or marketing administration covers marketing, ticket sales, publicity, public relations, imaging (advertising to attract sales), and audience development. They report to the CEO, and is responsible for strategic planning to maintain audiences and develop new audiences, and for promotion of the organization and its core products. Generating revenue from box office sales (including subscriptions) and meeting sales targets are central to this job. The Marketing Representatives are also responsible for calling and/or visiting record stores in specific areas to ensure the stores have enough product on hand to keep up with demand. This is especially important after something like a positive album review, award show, or a successful concert. The Marketing Representatives also gathers album sales reports from the various stores in a specific market and will then pass these sales numbers along to radio and TV stations, major trade publications, and others in the industry. Give an example of a piece of Marketing work. Eg an Ad, Poster or publicity stunt for an artist or band which helped them to be successful

What is the role of a Record Producer A record producer has a role in overseeing and managing the recordings of a band or performer's music. A producer has various roles that may include, but are not limited to, gathering ideas for a project, selecting songs and/or session musicians, proposing changes to the song arrangements, coaching the artist and musicians in the studio, controlling the recording sessions, and supervising the entire process through audio mixing. Producers also often take on a wider entrepreneurial role, with responsibility for the budget, schedules, contracts, and negotiations.

Universal Music Group Universal Music Group, Inc. (UMG Recordings, Inc., abbreviated as UMG) is an American-French worldwide music corporation that operates as a subsidiary of Paris-based French media conglomerate Vivendi. Avicii, Ariana Grande, Demi Lovato and many more are artists of this Record Label. UMG invest in their artists at every stage of their careers and strive to provide creative and commercial opportunities possible. they also provide UMG artists with the latest technology to keep track of the performances of their music, both financially and from a marketing perspective. The company’s ongoing investment in their royalty reporting systems allows them to provide detailed royalty data to their artists, along with many other significant features including proprietary reporting, search capabilities and trend analysis. UMG maintains several online access points for artists, songwriters, and publishers where they can view their royalty information at any time and from any computer or mobile device.

Do Performers, marketing managers and record producers need to work together Pt.1 I believe that performers, marketing managers and record producers need to work together because they all belong to one big cycle, for example based on the amount of people in the world that wants to become famous or want to create an album or to make a statement of some sort, record produces would jump in at this time (or the artist may go to them) to write and create songs to their target audience. Once a singer joins a record label (record producers), marketing managers will help or aid in making the artist/singer well-known by selling merchandise, labels, they’d also make sure that the music that the artist’s (that there working with) music gets release through-out the different medias such as Television, radio, mobile devices and other high-tech devices.

Do Performers, marketing managers and record producers need to work together Pt.2 This is very effective considering how hard it is sometimes to become an obsolete artist/singer/performer. Without marketing managers, record labels or performers/artist may have to find another way of succeeding in the music industry. It is so anti climactic that as I’m writing this down that I am actually listening to music right now. Anyway, it is like a semi-circle of becoming a professional or famous artist. The performer needs a record label to make music, and they also need marketing managers to advertise them…then again artist/singers don’t exactly need marketing managers or record producers because they could always do it on their own, but one of the misfortunes with this is that it wont be so easy and it may take some time. Even when you get to book a gig or a concert but some one will come around soon to drag you in to the music business. Good start to your points her but be a bit more clear.
