Native Americans and How They Adapted to the Land

Native American Migration

Notes The main reason why the Native Americans Migrated was because they were following their food source. Hunting and gathering was the dominate way of life. When the Native American traveled to North America their ways of hunting and gathering changed depending on where they settled. This caused different cultures to arise.

Plateau Region

Notes In order to survive humans have adapted to their environment. Some Native Americans adapted by changing their hunting habits from big game to smaller easily caught animals. They farmed the land and used available vegetation. They also made clothing to help them survive their environment.

Dome Dwelling in Omaha

Notes Native Americans only took what they needed from the environment They respected the environment and had a spiritual connection to it. Many stories of the Native Americans refer to animals, the environment, and how they have helped guide them to survive.

Inuit Man Making a Tool

Notes The environment and resources greatly influence culture. Native Americans did not waste these resources. Example; Eskimos hunted whale but they used all parts of it Meat for food Blubber for fuel Bones for tools

Things to Remember The environment was the most important factor influencing the development of rich and varied Native American Cultures Adaptations included making weapons, clothing, changing food gathering habits, and making the land livable.
