Lesson 1 Migration to the Americas Chapter 1 – Life in the Western Hemisphere Objectives: Explain why and how early people migrated from Asia to the Americas. Describe how the first Americans lived during the Ice Age. Identify how the way of life of the first Americans changed as the climate became warmer.

Scholars believe that during the Ice Age people and animals moved from Asia into North American by crossing a land bridge. How did this land bridge form? What caused the Ice Age? Why do you think early people migrated to North America?

4 Ways of Life Thoughts to consider… “Hunting provided more than food.”
At your table, brainstorm what that statement means. Early people used tools made from stones and bones to hunt animals for food, clothing and shelter. Thoughts to consider… How do archaeologists figure out what early people were like? Why did early people make temporary homes? Early people lived in groups. Why?

40,000-10,000 years ago Hunters migrated across a land bridge into North America. 10,000 years ago Early people were hunters and gatherers. 7,000 years ago Early people learned to grow food and began to settle. Group Discussion: As the Ice Age came to an end, the climate changed, and Ice Age animals became extinct. Early people’s way of life needed to change.
