Chapter 1 About Video

Key Terms You should have Camcorder- an appliance that both captures moving images (camera) & stores them on tape (recorder) Digitize- to record images & sounds as numerical data, either directly in a camcorder or in the process of importing them to a computer

Key Terms You should have Film- an audiovisual medium that records images on transparent plastic strips by means of photosensitive chemicals Live- recorded & (usually) transmitted for display continuously & in real time

Key Terms You should have Shoot- to record film or video; also “a shoot” is an informal term for the production phase of a film or video project Television- studio-based multicamera video that is often produced & transmitted “live”

Key Terms You should have Video- an audiovisual medium that records on magnetic tape or disk by electronic means; also, single-camera taped program creation in the manner of film production Visual Literacy- the ability to evaluate the content of visual media through an understanding of the way in which it is recorded & presented

What is Video? Until recently, video didn’t exist 2 main audiovisual media -film & TV

Why is film good? Portable Ability to reproduce quality images in black & white & color is highly refined Better editing is possible (separate recording tracks for audio & tape)

TV … not so hot??? Equipment was too heavy, complex, & tied down by cables Image quality worse than film Couldn’t be recorded for later editing

Video Language Image= single word Shot= complete sentence Scene= paragraph Sequence= chapter

Video Literacy Persuades you about what to buy or how to vote Tells you who’s important & why Tells you about your community, nation, & planet are working & how they should work Shows you what’s fashionable, desirable, & what you’re supposed to want Models ways to love, fight, work, worship, & dream

Video Production Preproduction- everything you do BEFORE you shoot (scripting/ storyboarding, scout locations, get cast & crew, & all equipment needs) Production- the actual shoot Postproduction- the editing process
