Objectives  Explain the meaning of “Video Communication”  Explain why it is important to understand the nature of the video world  Describe the 3 major phases of video production

What is Video? In the Beginning, video did not exist, there was only Film & Television  Film- an audiovisual medium that records images on transparent plastic strips by means photosensitive chemicals.  Portable equipment  Quality images  Picture and sound tracks are recorded on separate strip of film for editing  Television- studio-based, multicamera video that is often produced and transmitted “live”  Heavy, complex, tied down equipment  Low quality images/No color  Could not be edited

What is Video? cont. Improvements to Television  Camcorder- an appliance that both captures moving images (camera) and stores them on tape or other media (recorder).  Picture sharpness and color was developed  Professional quality programs can be produced with film or videotape

Video vs. Film VideoFilm  Picture clarity is coarse because the resolution is low  Color lacks a richness  Less flexibility in sound editing  More expensive to shoot and process  Less tolerant of light levels  Titles and effects cannot be added simultaneously  Editing is a long, tedious, and expensive step Video- an audiovisual medium that records on magnetic tape or other media by electronic means; also, single-camera taped program creation in the manner of film production rather than studio tv.

Video Talent and Jobs Creating stories, writing, reading Writer Director Video Editor Drawing, graphic arts Art Director Set and Costume Designer Makeup Artist Hands-on work Camera Operator Lighting Audio Recording Technical skills Audio and Video Engineering Management, people skills, organization, finance Production Manager

Visual Literacy Video is the most persuasive and powerful system ever invented for delivering facts, ideas, and opinions  Persuades you about what to buy and how to vote  Explains who is important in the world and why  Teaches you how your community, nation, and planet are working together  Shows what is in fashion and what is desirable  Models ways to love, fight, work, worship, and dream.

How Does Video Do It? Makes you feel that you are experiencing the actual sights and sounds of the real thing. Demonstrates an imitation of the real thing.  Video producers do not present reality; rather they offer their own versions of it.  Certain reality is selected and condensed  Every video comes with a certain point of view and reflects a set of standards

What can you do with “Visual Literacy? Separate the information you are watching from the methods used to organize and present it  Move past the artificial reality on your screen to search fro the actual reality beyond it.  Avoid being deceived by a medium that looks real, but is not.

The Nature of the Video World The TV or Video screen is a window that looks out on a completely different universe. Normal laws of space, time, and gravity do not work. The TV or Video screen is a window that looks out on a completely different universe. Normal laws of space, time, and gravity do not work.  An actor can open a door in London and walk through it in LA  A car can turn a corner and jump forward a week in time  An actor can fall ten stories onto concrete and walk away

The Nature of the Video World Writers, directors, designers, and editors understand how to use the laws of the video world to fool the viewer

The Language of Video Expression Video communication uses a visual language:  An image is like a single word  A shot is like a complete sentence  A scene is like a paragraph  A sequence is like a chapter

Video Production Preproduction Production Postproduction

Preproduction Everything you do before actual shooting begins The preproduction phase is often longer and more complicated than the production phase.  Scripting (or storyboarding)  Scouting locations  Gathering cast and crew  Planning production equipment and other requirements

Production The actual shooting of the material that will become the video program.  Responsibility is shared by the director, videographer, and production designer  The director guides the performers through their roles and ensures the content is recorded from appropriate points of view  The videographer is assisted by a lighting director and sound recordist

Postproduction Editing the collected footage  Select the shots  Assemble them in order  Add music and sound effects  Create titles and visual effects
