What does Writing Workshop look like in your classroom? How often do you do Writing Workshop and for how long? Be ready to share with the group

Don’t let your long term goals Where Do I Begin? Don’t let your long term goals sink your workshop!

Writing Workshop Routines Routines are how the workshop time is structured. 􀂄 Opening meeting (lessons, modeling) 􀂄 Work period (Independent Writing, Guided Writing Peer Conferencing, Teacher Conferencing) 􀂄 Closing meeting (sharing)

“Kids need regular, predictable time to write…they need this time to establish purposes for their writing, and time to achieve those purposes. The more actively engaged students are, the more time you have to coach and instruct them as they grow as writers.” Fletcher/Portalupi P. 15

Writing Workshop Rituals 􀂄 Rituals are about the procedures used in the workshop time. Room arrangement Location of materials Process for turning in work

What Are the Rituals in Your Classroom? Draw a map of your classroom Label meeting place, materials, and work space Share Out

Writing Workshop Instruction Modeled Writing Shared Writing Guided Writing Independent Writing

Turn and Talk Talk with a partner about these questions… What does Modeled Writing mean to you? What does Shared Writing mean to you? What does Guided Writing mean to you? What does Independent Writing mean to you? Write your thoughts on the provided sticky notes and add them to the chart when finished

What is Modeled Writing? large or small group setting not interactive the teacher composes and interacts with text the teacher does all of the writing the teacher “thinks aloud” to demonstrate the writing process occurs during the mini-lesson portion of Writers' Workshop helps students become aware of the structures and patterns of written language

What is Shared Writing? large or small group setting the teacher and students compose and interact with the text the teacher does all of the writing the teacher and the students “think aloud” to demonstrate the writing process occurs during the mini-lesson portion of Writing Workshop the teacher acts as scribe and writes the text as it is composed.

What is Guided Writing? Small flexible groups during writing workshop Students have similar needs EXPLICITLY teach writer’s craft, strategies and skills Time to practice applying strategies and skills with your support

Student Roles in Independent Writing Participate in large group mini lesson Apply new knowledge to own writing independently Choose topic and write about it Confer with teacher and group members Share writing for feedback Use feedback as guide for revising and editing Publish writing when appropriate

Time Management in the Writing Workshop

Mini Lesson Ideas Use what you know about the grade level that you teach and the mini lesson handouts to think about: What are some mini lessons you will teach to the full group? What are some mini lessons you will teach to smaller groups during guided writing? How will you balance independent writing and guided writing in your classroom?
