4 Essential Question How can I make the Aiken County Public School District Workshop Model for Reading and Writing work in my primary classroom?

5 Presenters Meeting Outcomes
At the end of this session, teachers will walk away with tips and tricks to get Reading and Writing Workshop up and running for the new school year. You will find out ways to organize and set up your room for success from the start! Have an open mind and be ready to change the way you think about your Workshop!

6 Where do I start? Have you looked at Rubicon lately?
Unit 1 – Establishing the Workshop/Literacy Focus “This unit of instruction focuses on establishing an effective workshop. The ultimate goal for this unit is to create students who want to learn to read and write and provide them with the strategies to be able to do so successfully. Teachers will establish routines and procedures for students to select appropriate texts, establish partner reading rituals, build stamina and sustain momentum during independent reading, and establish mini-lessons through shared reading, interactive read-alouds, and word study.”

8 Where do I start?

9 Where do I start? Do you… Still use the Basal? Still use worksheets?
Do Stations and Guided Reading? Have Lucy Calkins Units of Study for Reading and/or Writing?

10 The Struggle is REAL! Are you ready to LET IT GO? Classroom Setup
Rituals and Routines Structure Time

11 Classroom Setup Is your classroom “kid friendly?”
Are there open spaces for students to read and write? Are supplies available? Is there a “gathering space” where you begin your lessons? Is your library organized and labeled for easy access? Do you have mentor texts? Do you have charts, markers, and sticky notes?

12 Classroom Set Up

13 Classroom Setup Take a good look and think about what you are REALLY doing with your students… Ask yourself, “Is it a purposeful learning experience that fosters independence?” If it doesn’t serve a valid purpose, let it go! PLE’s are NOT PLE’s COULD BE Worksheets Independent reading Copying spelling words Partner reading Looking up definitions Discussion groups/literature circles Unrelated computer games Responses to reading to extend and deepen the experience Arts and crafts Inquiry projects and researched based on interest Nonsense word practice Demonstration and reflection of strategy use in independent reading Moses and Ogden 2017

30 Where to find everything…
In an effort to help you get your workshop started, I’ve compiled a list of resources for you found on my classroom website:

31 Something to think about…
Studies have shown that the number of minutes students spend reading at school is associated with gains in reading achievement and that teachers are influential in determining how much time students spend at school reading (Taylor, Frye, and Maruyama 1990). How much time do you give your students to read every day?
