Essential Question: What is a nonfiction book? Enduring Understanding: Nonfiction text is different than fiction text. Activity How do I get there? With me: (Teacher)-small group with teacher Timer: 5 min or any time depending Scavenger hunt type lesson: searching for non fiction features Use of mini post its find books to give to teacher or check in with peers Teacher check ins Follow roles within group Use of clear folders to circle some preselected features in a pre selected high interest text Include share time –what we learned, what was exciting, surprising etc Students Choices Assign lesson tiles to different groups, use a variety of student center resources Noise Meter and Control Choice of e-book vs. printed text or media (magazine) Choice of selected text feature (one group finds bold print versus captions) Choice of product: mini brochure with pictures, post its and labels, teacher time and checklists Norms posted SOMEWHERE even if on board for proper functionality within groups
