WorkIT SQA Work Placement Units & Pupil Questionnaires

SQA Work Placement Units SCQF Levels 3, 4 and 5 Pupils – collection of Unit evidence; mobile friendly Co-ordinators - Reviewing and assessing Unit evidence Reviewed with SQA – tool useful for collection of evidence These are Key points about the Unit. It can be used for Levels 3,4 and 5. We didn’t implement for 6. It can be used by Pupils to collect Unit evidence and it is mobile friendly. We’ve also tried to keep it simple. It can be used by coordinators to review and assess Unit evidence. We also tried to keep that as simple as possible. It has been reviewed with the SQA who thought it was a useful tool for collection of evidence.

Getting started A Unit is started by the pupil Evidence recorded and assessed in three sections Co-ordinator is required to complete the following tasks for each section: The structure of the Unit is that: It is started by the pupil but it’s expected that the pupil would have previously had some discussion with a teacher, e.g. which level are they aiming at. Evidence is recorded and assessed in three sections, and the process for each section is similar: The pupil completes the Before Placement section and submits it to teacher for review. They assess it. The pupil completes the During Placement section and submits it to teacher for review. They assess it. And finally the pupil completes the After Placement section and submits it to teacher for review. When teacher assesses that last section as achieved, the Unit is automatically achieved. So the teacher doesn’t assess all in one go – they assess three times.

Getting started (cont.) Schools can download paper copies of the Unit worksheets from the quick tips and how to section on WorkIT. Here you will also find a link to the SQA website. Recommend co-ordinators look at the blank worksheets to understand what evidence pupils will be asked to collect and when For teachers starting with the Unit, we recommend they have a look at the paper copies of the Worksheets that can be found in the Coordinator Quick tips. This would give teachers an idea of what evidence the pupils would be asked to collect and when. There is also a link to the SQA site for Placement Units where the Unit Specifications for the three levels can be found

Pupils – Starting Unit Unit needs to be started before placement! The pupil starts the Unit with basic details 1 2 3 Pupils role. First of all, the Unit needs to be started before the placement. This is because part of the Unit outcome deals with planning for a work placement. The pupil will see a new SQA Work Placement Unit section on their home page. To start a Unit, click on the link ‘”Start your work placement Unit”. The next screen is a short introduction and when they continue on they will be asked to complete a short form. The form captures basic information about the Unit, e.g. what level are they aiming at. This could be an estimated level as it could be changed later. Who their teacher is. They could select a booked placement or instead record an estimated start date. There are benefits to selecting a booked placement as details are copied into their “Before Placement” worksheet.

Pupils – Collecting Evidence Unit summary on pupil home page Once the Pupil starts a Unit, they can immediately start completing their “Before placement” section. Their home page also changes to include a summary of their progress in the Unit. E.g. in this screenshot the pupil has completed 13% of the “Before Placement” section. The icons also change to indicate whether they can complete sections, or whether the teacher requires them to change some evidence and resubmit. To view the Unit in more detail and to enter evidence, pupils should click on the View icon which is highlighted.

Pupils – Collecting Evidence (cont.) Doing so gives the pupil access to a Unit dashboard with 3 sections at the bottom for each of the three sections. In the Before placement section they have access to the Edit Worksheet button. Once they go on placement they have access to these two buttons. And finally after placement they can start completing the final worksheet. They can also edit their Unit details, e.g. to change their level or teacher name. Note that coordinator can also do this. If the pupil wants to read all the information that they have entered, they can click on this button where they can also download Unit evidence into a PDF.

Pupils – Collecting Evidence (cont.) This is an example of an online worksheet form. Most of the forms deals with free text fields where there are spellcheckers. At the bottom on each form are Save and Cancel buttons. The pupil can enter information into the worksheets, save it and return later. Once they think they have entered all their information, they should submit it to the teacher for assessment. They do this by checking this box and click on Submit. The coordinator can then see that a section is required to be assessed.

Pupils – Collecting Evidence (cont.) Before Section – My Review – identify Career Goals and complete My strengths Links to Planit and My WoW for help with this part There are limited resources in the Unit for pupils determining what to input into the Unit worksheets forms. But there is a toolbox icon in the “Before Placement” worksheet which they can used to see links to external resources, e.g. They could use PlanIt career match to understand their Career Goals.

Pupils - Sections Before – planning placement. Should agree learning goal or project aim with the teacher During – placement supervisor completes/signs the placement progress sheet and pupils must upload it to WorkIT During – update learning or project plan and own review of progress After – Reflection and review of career goals This is just an overview of the sections. Note that During requires two worksheets to be completed. One for the supervisor to complete and the pupil to upload into WorkIT. The second for the pupil to update their plan and do one review of their progress.

Reviewing Unit Evidence Co-ordinators can review placement evidence once the pupils have submitted their work for review. Review sections as soon as submitted. Don’t wait until end of placement! The Coordinator has a new section in their home page which they can use to see the status on the Units. In this screen shot, there are two Units waiting to be reviewed by a teacher. There are 36 Units which are being progress by Pupils There are 7 Units that have been withdrawn. Both a pupil and coordinator can withdraw a Unit. There is 1 Unit for this session that has been achieved. And 1 unit that hasn’t been achieved. Please remember that Units are not assessed when all the evidence is entered. They are assessed in 3 stages so teacher should assess as soon as possible. For instance, if a pupil is going on placement, the “Before placement” should be assessed before they go on placement so that the teacher can inform the pupil of any corrections before they go.

Reviewing Unit Evidence (cont.) Co-ordinators can review Unit evidence either: by section, e.g. all During sections that require review by pupil When a teacher clicks any of the links on the home page, they will get a listing of those Units making up that count. This is an example. There are two Units waiting for review. To make it as simple for a teacher to review, we have given two methods for a teacher to assess. The first one is by section, e.g. if you have a number of pupils going on placement in a week, you could ask them to submit their before placement sections by a certain date and then assess them all in one go, in batch. To do that you would click on a link highlighted by A. Alternatively, teacher may want to just view one pupil at a time and assess them that way. They would click on the icon highlighted by B A B

Reviewing Unit Evidence (cont.) By Section By Pupil A B Here are examples of the pages displayed when the teacher assesses by the two methods. The first one is by section. You can see two pupils are going to be assessed: Kara Oliver and Jack Black. The teacher would click on the pupil name to view their section information and enter their assessment. Section could be “Not Reviewed” if you don’t want to assess it now or Achieved. Teacher can also indicate if it is Not achieved or ask that the pupil correct information and resubmit. The second is by pupil. The teacher can see all the information that a pupil has submitted, with navigation that they can click to quickly jump to a section, e.g. a section that is to be reviewed. There is also a area at the bottom to enter an assessment.

Assessing the Unit Each section is assessed before the Unit can be successfully achieved. Feedback and comment on sections before marking as achieved/not achieved/Review and resubmit. Remember that the Unit is assessed 3 times. Not all in one go at the end of the Unit.

Future Plans Additional Reports Workplace Learning Plan (October 2017) Additional Resources (End of Year) Unit has a couple of project items outstanding. A couple of reports that might be useful for SQA but note that there is no interface with SQA. If SQA require information about a Unit the teacher can either display a read only page with all the Unit evidence, or download a PDF. A Workplace Learning Plan which is due in October. This would be linked to a booked placement but could be used with or without a Unit. When a Unit is also started, a pupil may be able to look at the contents of their Workplace Learning plan when completing some of the worksheets. Also plan some additional resources which would be added to WorkIT which could help Pupils complete their Unit evidence.
