Presentation transcript:

Dr. Amelia Acker @amelia_acker Digital Preservation in Mobile Networks some emerging trends and forecasts Dr. Amelia Acker @amelia_acker

Research questions As we move from an information society to a networked era, how will collections transform? How do mobile phones and next generation networks change the ways we read, write, create memory and the cultural record? How will preservation infrastructures that support mobile computing unfold in the near future? How do iSchools teach digital preservation and curation now? How and what should we teach in 3-5 years?

Mobile records are born networked Next generation wireless networks (3G, 4G, LTE, and soon 5G) support how we create, access, transmit data through the internet

Earlier work: SMS, social media, participatory sensing Text messaging and the Short Message Service standardization Personal digital archives and social media platforms Platform perspective for digital preservation Participatory app development for community data campaigns Mobile computing cultures Networked transactions, mobile receipts Technology-in-the-making

Data Cultures Collections of Data Information professionals Preservation institutions Consider the distance between emerging data cultures and their collections

Data structures in mobile platforms Social media platforms involve a high level of short messaging, media creation and upload Smartphone operating systems push cloud storage for content creation and privilege internal storage for apps Apps engage in a regime of constant software updates (and sometimes update resistance) and content lock-in The atomic level of the system is no longer the file format Traditional ideas about local storage are disappearing Apps are being shuttered and sunsetted at rates that are hard to track

On sustainability and the future of apps
