Environments of media The medium is the message - how we communicate is as relevant as the content of our messages. Our fluid, seemingly ethereal informational media has a place in the material world, an infrastructure of computers, people, labor, and resources. Media also shapes our impressions and ideas of what spaces and places are like Media has created new environments, places where communication of ideas takes places

New media The emerging modes of mass communication, which today are largely digital and affiliated with the internet and the interplay between technology, images and sound.

Remediation How media constantly remediating its predecessors. For example, new digital media are reincorportating aspects of television, radio, print journalism and oral communication

Algorithmic society Rather than our rhythms of living set to the day and night, and our ideas derived from traditional non-digital modes of learning, we are increasingly tethered to the rhythms of the software, or algorithms, that manage our daily tasks.

Network society The expression coined in 1981 related to the social, political, economic and cultural changes caused by the spread of networked, digital information and communications technologies.

Time-space convergence With improvements in communication systems (and methods of transport), the barrier of geographic distance is lessening. You can be simultaneously everywhere or anywhere on the internet

Microwork A series of small tasks which together comprise a large unified project, and are completed by many people over the Internet.

Data shadows The sum of all small traces of information that an individual leaves behind. The trackable data that a person creates by using technologies such as credit cards, cell phones, and the Internet.

Digital divide The gap between demographics and regions that have access to modern information and communications technology, and those that don't or have restricted access.

Cybertyping The ways in which people stereotype within new media of the digital era and as a result propagate inequalities
