Math 120: Pre-calculus 2 Instructor: Mike Panitz (mpanitz@cascadia.ctc.edu) http://freire.cascadia.ctc.edu/facultyweb/ instructors/mpanitz/2006Wi/MATH120/

Why take this course? For people who are looking to take calculus Note that this is the math class that WILL be added into your GPA (unlike classes ≤ Math 100) Thus the assumption is that if you’re here, you’re planning on going on to Math 130, a four-year school, etc Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2!

Pre-reqs Completion of MATH 110 or MATH 115 with a grade of 2.0 or higher or placement by testing in MATH 120. AND Completion of ENG 100 with a grade of 2.0 or higher or placement by testing in ENG 101. If you don’t meet these pre-reqs, but are somehow enrolled in the class, you will be administratively un-enrolled after this class. If you know you don’t meet the pre-reqs, talk to me ASAP Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2!

Goals Relax & enjoy math Master the material in this class Trigonometry Pre-calculus preparation Learn how to learn new math concepts Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2!

Today Go over syllabus, grading, homework, etc Review material from prior classes Chapters 1, 2 and 3 (4e) | Chapters 1 through 5 (3e) Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2!

Next Lecture Logarithm Review Start looking at Trigonometric Functions Chapter 4 (4e) | Chapter 6 (3e) Start looking at Trigonometric Functions Chapter 6 (4e) | Chapter 8 (3e) Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2!

Lectures and Homework Page 1 Week Per Column Tuesday goes in the top box Thursday goes in the bottom box Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2!

Lectures and Homework Page Slides Slides are for public consumption, and generally contain announcements relevant to that lecture Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2!

Lectures and Homework Page In-Class Exercises We’ll work through these exercises in-class Unfinished exercises will either be: Copied into the next lesson’s in-class exercises (meaning we’ll finish them next lecture) NOT COPIED, in which case you don’t have to finish them. Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2!

Lectures and Homework Page Listed for each section Listed for the third edition (3e) and the fourth edition (4e) Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2!

Lectures and Homework Page For the first two weeks: You must hand in the completed homework the lecture after the homework was assigned. You must finish the HW by the beginning of the lecture So you need to bring in the Week 1, Tuesday homework this Thursday. We’ll try handing them in via the ‘Homework Box’, which I’ll leave out at the front of the room Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2!

Lectures and Homework Page Instructor’s Notes Notes are for the instructor’s use, and not meant for public consumption If they help you, that’s great If not, too bad  Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2!

Syllabus I’ve handed out the syllabus This is the FULL syllabus! It’s also available on the website: http://freire.cascadia.ctc.edu/facultyweb/instructors/ mpanitz/2006Wi/MATH120/ If info isn’t on here, you should ask before it’s an issue. YOU are responsible for knowing the syllabus! Details may change without notice However, exams will occur on the specified dates. Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2!

Required Book Required Book: Algebra & Trigonometry, 4th Edition By Sullivan & Sullivan Published By Prentice Hall, 2005 ISBN: 0131527398 Also ok: Algebra & Trigonometry, 3rd Edition ISBN: 0-13-065912-6 (If you use the 3rd edition, you’re responsible for making sure that you’re doing all the right homework problems, reading the right material, etc, etc) Get this now!! You need this immediately, so don’t delay!!! Best to do the reading before class Try to bring the book to class (Each group of people should bring at least 1 book amongst them) Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2!

Calculators You’re required to have a graphing, scientific calculator for this class Calculator rentals In the Open Learning Center, 1st come, 1st served Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2!

Calculators If you do buy a TI-83, 84, 86, 89, etc Please donate your proof-of-purchase to the school If you have a different, graphing, calc. (HP, etc) I’ll try to help you with it, but your mileage may vary Bringing the calculator’s manual to class will help BRING YOUR CACLUATOR NEXT CLASS! If it’s not a TI-83, bring the manual, too Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2!

Extra Help Math lab My Office Hours Pretty comprehensive hours, great source for help. My Office Hours Wednesday, noon - 3:30pm By Appointment Email me: MPanitz@cascadia.ctc.edu Phone: (425) 352 - 8211 Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2!

No Cheating! “In the event copying should occur, the plagiarist will receive a grade of zero for the assignment. If someone plagiarizes work a second time, that person will be given the option of either withdrawing (if the drop deadline hasn't been passed) or taking a "0.0" for the term.” Examples of individual work: Homework Assignments Take-Home Exams Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2!

Behavior Rules Quiet while I’m lecturing Whisper, if you talk at all If you have trouble hearing me, sit towards the front Work during In Class Exercise time If you finish a problem, try the next one If you finish everything, chose more problems on your own Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2!

Grading Exams Final Exam Homework: In-Class Exercises Details in syllabus You’re responsible for everything there, even if I don’t talk about it now. 500 points for the quarter Every point has the same weight as any other Exams TWO exams, drop none 100 pts each Final Exam 150 points Homework: 3 ‘blocks’, each worth 32 points 4 points for emailing the prof (from the web page, or directly) In-Class Exercises 2.5 points per lecture, max of 50 points Grading Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2!

Grading A 2.0 is obtained by getting 75% of the available points This is 375 or more points Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2!

Personal Data Sheet I’ll hand this out now So I know something about you If you don’t want to fill in a part, leave it blank Send me an email from an account you read In the Subject, put the word “MATH 120” (Note that there isn’t any space between MATH and 120) This will allow me to email you if class gets cancelled Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2!

Pairwise Interviews: Your Math History Group up in pairs A triple is ok, if there is an odd number of people 5 minutes to: Introduce yourself – name, what brings you to Cascadia, what do you want to get from it, etc. Ask about prior courses in math – when was the last time you took a course, what was it, how did you do, how do you feel about it, etc Future goals: Where you want to go from here Introduce your buddy, to your buddy (i.e., make sure you don’t say anything that will embarrass the person  ) 5 minutes to present your summary to another pair, and listen to their presentation. Then I’ll call on some people to intro their buddy Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2!

Save A Copy Of All Work!! In-class work, EXAMS, Quizzes, etc,etc If you work with someone, make sure each of you gets a copy For in-class work, you don’t have to hand it in (I’ll be checking it as I walk around & watch you work) If you lose track of it, and I mis-record it, then whatever I’ve got will stand as a grade Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2!
