1 Welcome to Physics 1403!!

2 For example, see the next slide!
Why Study Physics? (Reasons other than the fact that it may be required for your major!) Two of Many Reasons It is obviously vital to the functioning of our modern technology. A less obvious reason is that it is as important to the understanding of our society, our culture, & our history as are, say, good literature & poetry, good art, good music, etc., etc., etc. For example, see the next slide!

3 A & E's “Top 10” most influential People of the Past Millennium
Physicists are listed in red!! 1. Johann Gutenberg 2. Isaac Newton 3. Martin Luther 4. Charles Darwin 5. William Shakespeare 6. Christopher Columbus 7. Karl Marx 8. Albert Einstein 9. Nicolaus Copernicus 10. Galileo Galilei 5 out of 10 were scientists! (Western Culture) Biologist!

4 A & E's “Top 10” most influential People of the Past Millennium
Physicists are listed in red!! 1. Johann Gutenberg 2. Isaac Newton 3. Martin Luther 4. Charles Darwin 5. William Shakespeare 6. Christopher Columbus 7. Karl Marx 8. Albert Einstein 9. Nicolaus Copernicus 10. Galileo Galilei 5 out of 10 were scientists! (Western Culture) Biologist! Culture Quiz!! Who were these people? Why are they famous?

5 Get into the habit of checking this page often!
Class Web Site! There, you can find: 1. Posted (Word format): Syllabus, Help Resources, old exams (& solutions), old quizzes (& solutions) 2. Posted (Power Point format): Lectures 3. Important Class Announcements & Calendar Items! 4. Links to Web Pages for a tutor list & for the textbook 5. Other important items relating to this class. PLEASE!! Get into the habit of checking this page often!

6 The Announcement Page:
Linked from the class Web Site is: The Announcement Page: This contains class announcements & major calendar items. Please check it often! If you’re curious about me, you might also check My Web page:

7 Email Distribution List!
Physics 1403 Distribution List! It is important that I have your correct (preferred) address!! I’ll use the distribution list to make important class announcements!!! Please check your OFTEN!!! PLEASE tell me if you change your address!

8 Math Pre-Requisites for This Course
Math is the Language of Physics!! But, this is NOT a math course!! I’ll not have time to teach math to you! I must assume that you know it!! The primary student difficulties with the course are often math-related!!

9 Math Review in Appendix B!
Math Pre-Requisites: Math 1320: Algebra AND Math 1321: Trigonometry Or: Math 1550: Pre-Calculus Equivalent courses somewhere else! Take advantage of the: Math Review in Appendix B!

10 Physics 1403 Laboratory/Discussion
Lab/Discussion is a required co-requisite! IF you drop the lecture you MUST drop the lab also! (Exceptions?? Ask in Physics Office, Room 101!!) Attention! No Lab/Discussion meetings this week!! Next Week: All Lab/Discussion sections meet for discussion only, except Mon. sections (Labor Day). Experiments (Lab Portion) will not start until the week of September 12!

11 Physics 1403 Laboratory/Discussion
NOTE!! Students must purchase a lab manual before the first lab meeting. Starting Wednesday, August 31, they will be for sale by the Society of Physics Students in Room 4 of this building. COME to lab PREPARED to start!!

12 There will be office hours for this person.
Where to Go for Help?? See the syllabus, which covers this! Or See Me!!! Room 18. During office hours or not (I’m usually not rigid about these). Or call me on the phone. Or me! I respond to !!! See your Lab TA!!! There will be office hours for this person. A portion of each 3 hour lab meeting will be for problem solving (recitation) so bring homework problems to lab & ask your TA about them. Get a tutor!!! The Physics Office (Room 101) has an approved list.

13 Where to Go for Help?? Your Fellow Students!!! The Class Web Page!
An effective strategy is to work on homework & to study for quizzes & exams together in a group. This is how professionals work in the “real world”. The Internet!!! There are HUGE numbers of Physics Help web sites! Using Google & typing in “Physics Help” gives about 191,000,000 hits!!!! I encourage you to try out some. The Class Web Page!

14 Bottom Line on Help HELP RESOURCES AVAILABLE!!
IF YOU NEED HELP, TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE MANY HELP RESOURCES AVAILABLE!! If you need help & don’t use these resources, only YOU are to blame!

15 To Succeed in this Course
See the document (posted on 1403 website) “How to succeed in Physics by Really Trying” READ the book, which cost you many $$$! It’s most effective to read the material BEFORE I lecture over it. WORK the assigned homework problems!! Before looking at the solutions. Copying the solutions will NOT teach you physics. WORK extra problems!

16 To Succeed in this Course
COME TO CLASS! There is a correlation between attendance & grades! Also, skipping means that you are WASTING the tuition & fees that you (or someone) paid! With tuition & fees for a full-time student, each class meeting costs about $27! Each time you skip, you are throwing away $27!! After a while this adds up! My lectures may not be entertaining or brilliant, but I do expose you to the material. ATTENDANCE!!! THE WEEKEND DOESN’T BEGIN ON FRIDAY which IS A REGULAR CLASS DAY!!!

17 Some of us call this course “Fire Hose Physics”!
This is because the Physics knowledge & concepts come at you so fast, your learning something is analogous to you trying to drink out of a fire hose!
