Purpose: To participate in a collaborative conversation about censorship, technological advancements, characterization, and symbolism in Part 1 of Fahrenheit 451 The teacher will explain the purpose of the collaborative activity.

The World Café creates a space for collaborative inquiry in which participants continually discover shared meaning, access collective intelligence, generate new knowledge, and experience new levels of creativity, analysis, and synthesis that are energizing and exciting. The entire experience fosters a strong sense of shared commitment and ownership of the outcomes of the discussion.

Café Conversations Process Explore a Topic Host Guides Discussions 3 Rotations Each Builds on Previous Discussion Café Conversations are small conversation clusters used to explore a question or issue that matters to their community or organization. Other participants seated at nearby tables or in conversation clusters explore similar questions at the same time. As you talk, please write down and/or illustrate key ideas on “paper tablecloths” or “Giant Sticky Notes” that are there for that purpose. The host at each table will take notes on the pads provided during each of the three conversations. Please be sure to write responses and ideas legibly on the tablets. The tablets will be collected and used for teacher evaluation of your groups work. If you are a host at a table, you will remain at that table for the entire activity—you will not rotate. We will repeat this process for three rounds. We would then like all participants to engage in a whole-group conversation, contributing to a gathering or “harvesting” of the actionable ideas and recommendations that have emerged.

Etiquette Focus and Contribute Cite text evidence to support points Link and Connect Ideas Listen for Insights and Deeper Questions Be Respectful of others A few simple practices enable participants to support each other in speaking and listening authentically—and in being more aware of how every participant contributes to a collective whole.

Café host Welcome Guests Cognizant of Time Keeps Group on Task Encourage Participation Connect Ideas The task of the World Café host is to put the World Café design principles into action, with thoughtfulness, artistry, and care. A good host can make the difference between participants simply having an interesting conversation and their experiencing true breakthrough thinking. Encourage everyone to participate—to write, speak, and draw key ideas. Write down key ideas that are discussed. The teacher will let students know when it is time to rotate to a new table and begin a new round of conversation. Remind them that the table host will welcome the new guests and briefly share the main ideas, themes, and questions of the initial conversation. Encourage guests to link and connect ideas coming from their previous table conversations – listening carefully and building on the contributions of others.

You will have ten minutes at each of four tables, so you will not be moving to all tables during this activity. Remember that the hosts do not rotate with the groups.
