1 Literary Cafe

2 OBJECITVE By the end of the period SWBAT evaluate and discuss claims and themes communicated by texts in COLLECTION 1: Coming to America. by participating in a Literary Café “Ticket Out the Door.”

3 World Café – Stations There are stations around the room.
Choose a a station There is menu with a series of questions at each table that you are to discuss with the group. Your job will be to think about then discuss the questions as a group.

4 PROCEDURES There will be Three sessions: APPETIZER, MAIN COURSE, DESSERT Each session will last APPETIZER will last 5 minutes MAIN COURSE AND DESSERT 15 minutes minutes. 5 minutes to choose your menu item and write your opinion about the question. 5 minutes to discuss the question as a group. Add someone else’s ideas to your KNOWLEDGE PLACEMAT.

5 You may use your NOTEBOOK during the activity.
PROCEDURES Write your opinion about the question during the writing section. Everyone must participate in the table discussions. Stay on task. Respect each other’s opinion. Write on the butcher paper after discussions. No more than four people at a table. You may use your NOTEBOOK during the activity.

A. What is the purpose and claim/ theme of this text? C. Choose a quote that exemplifies tha author’s argument or purpose. D. How does this author’s views compare to yours? Explain.

8 Ticket out the Door: What idea do all the texts in this collection have in common? How do they help us understand American values and identity?

9 Each person will read their Ticket Out the Door to the class.
Whip Around Each person will read their Ticket Out the Door to the class. We will rotate through each row. We will start on the right side of the room. Make sure to speak loudly so that everyone can hear!!!

10 Home Work – World Café Note Sheet
It will be due tomorrow along with your FINAL ESSAY!
